Shopnotes Article about DC by Rick Peters

Hi

I am in the process of setting up a workshop and have been doing a lot a research into Dust Control since I will be using a 15" Thicknesser and 8" Jointer connected to an FM300 Dust Collector. I got the book "Controlling Dust in the Workshop" by Rick Peters and have gained lots of ideas.

In the book he refers to an article titled "Dust Collection System" that was printed in Shopnotes magazine Issue 13. I am interested in getting a copy of this article (and also one from Issue 55 titled "Dust Collector Upgrade"). I went to the Shopnotes Backissues website and it will cost me more to get the magazines once converted to $AUD (I only want one section from each) than the book cost me.

Does anybody have these issues that I could get copies of the articles from? They aren't available through the Libraries in Australia.

I am looking at using Rick's rubbish bin Separator system and placing it on top of a box to catch the big chips and hence help maintain the efficiency of the system. This will leave the DC bags to filter the finer dust. More time playing with the tools between bin empties.

When time and money permit I'll probably build a proper Cyclone but I want to see how this idea goes first.

i was at major woodworking at Padstow here is Sydney a few weeks ago picking up some cast iron legs for a lathe
they had a new jet dust extractor that fits on the top of a large drum cost of the unit is $499 and $36 for the very large drum
there number is 0297083233
or maybe woodworking warehouse in VIC has them 03 95873999 i bought the drum and i going to covert my 2 bag extractor

What you are proposing to do is similar to what I did using a 44 gallon drum , you can find the details of this post on :

I joined a Woodworking Forum in the US and have been able to get the articles I wanted from someone there. It took a while to find a US forum that looks busy. The one I joined seems very busy. It's the Woodworkers Website Association. For anyone interested go to:

I have seen the Jet separator in books and articles before but I want to try to avoid having the problem of emptying the bin continually to keep up the efficiency.

My system will be similar to yours but I am going to use a plastic bin to create a pseudo cyclone which has the bottom cut out to allow the sawdust to fall into a box that can be easily removed for emptying.

Once I get it all done I will let you know how it works.
