G'day guys,

Just had to tell someone. I managed to install Ubuntu (its a Linux based operating system) on the laptop last night and it is AWESOME.

I must say I have 2 relatively new computres and it always makes me VERY angry that a computer with a couple of pieces of software installed, with lots of memory would still crash :((. And it usually crashes at the WORST possible time :((.

I had heard of Linux before but it all sounded way too hard. I read an article in the paper recently singing the praises of Ubuntu and I thought I'd give it a go. Installation was idiot proof, not any harder than Windows XP, and allowed me to keep the existing windows on the harddisk (just in case).

It is very easy to use and comes with the equivalent of Office which has managed to open all of my current work without problems.

Internet was very easy to set-up through wireless. The system is rock solid (no crashes at all), I dont think I will go back to Windows again unless I need an application specific to it.

The added benefit is that when you buy a new computer you dont have to pay for the operating system all over again!:2tsup:

I obtained the operating system from their website by downloading the image of the cdrom and burning the disk as described.

Fantastic stuff,

Marios

Had a look at it, sounds good.
Setup sounds easy and theres open source software available too.

How easy is it to set up a home network?

Can you setup with 2 os's so I can still use a couple of windows or dos programs when neeeded.?

If any one has tried linux and had a bad experience then they should try Ubuntu.

You can play with a live disk before you install (imagine going to bunnings and they let you go and get some wood off the shelf and try out a few router bits in their store and then just walk away because they are not what you want).

You can even get away with not installing and just use the live disk that does not do any thing to your existing installation.

It does run slower as live disk because CDs are much, much slower than hard disks.

The beauty of open source software is that you can get in and change things to suit your needs.......kind of like jig building.

There is a package called "ubuntu-restricted extras" that if you install will allow you to play a lot of different media formats and web plugin things that do not work out of the box.

Marios,
Give it a few days and you will start noticing that it is a lot faster too.

Put a bit of time into learning a few commands and it gets a lot faster still.

No more automatic updates, no more "do you want to report this error" messages.

Run it a couple of years and you will have forgotten about system crashes. 99.9% of the virus and malicious crap out there is not aimed at you any more.

Feels good eh?

Cheers
Bill, FC5 user. (can't be bothered to upgrade, if it's not broke why fix it?).

echidna,

I havent tried home networking yet but will give it a go some time. At the moment just learning the ropes. The great thing is that you can leave windows on the comp and have both, so if you get into strife or want to use a windows specific application you can. I have not seen one of those application error thingies yet :U. The only problem I have come across is logging into ebay, it just wont let me, I am sure I will figure it out though :D. Word, powerpoint and excel (which is what I use the most) are no longer needed. Open office will let me work with all of those files with no problems :2tsup:.

I wish I had done this earlier.

Just can't get my head around it yet. Couple of questions. Do you need to be on the net?(I have another computer I would like to try it on). What happens to all your programs like Sketchup, Autocad and the like? Can you transfer your programs over from windows? If your on the net do you have to get everything up and running, Like mail and so on?

To run windows apps in Linux, you'll need to install an emulator (http://www.winehq.org/) (sorry, API compatibility layer) - this will let you run them as if they were running on a virus prone and poorly secured environment. You wont notice any performance hit.

There's a list of all the known working under Wine apps on that site.

I need windows for my CAD program, I've got so used to it I can't contemplate a change. I also try to check out how my website looks in IE. There are always the odd thing that Firefox can fix on the fly, but IE is less easy to get right.

I have a dual boot system, I get a screen at start up that lets me choose between WinXP and Linux (it defaults to Linux after 2 seconds).

This system works for me, I copy and transfer stuff from one to another via a memory stick. A bit of a pain, but I only fire up XP on the odd occasions now.

If there was no such thing as the Internet I would be still using XP, but there is, so I have adapted to the faster and more secure environment of Linux for almost everything.

Ideal situation for me would be two separate computers, which I had running for about 5 years. One running XP not connected and ran perfectly. But when I had to access the net via IE I did the dual boot.

Cheers

You can also use Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx) from Microsoft or VMWare (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/) which will run both operating systems at the same time. You can use Linux for most things and switch instantly to Windows when you need to. You will need extra memory to do this tho.

And ubunutu unleashes your pc, becasue in almost all cases no need to run virus checkers and firewalls. These really slow down things in windoze.

Guys stil cant get ubuntu to let me login into ebay or netbank, it may well be my set-up but something worth considering if you are planning on deleting windows. I can get onto most other sites though, cant explain it!
I have also realised that ubuntu comes with lots and lots of software and utilities that can be installed as an option (graphics, desktop publishing, etc).

Marios, are you using FireFox on your ubuntu?

It should just work, I've used it for ebay and netbank without any problems. Have a look at your prefs for javascript, it should be allowed for those sites to work.

yeah linux is great, abit more nerdy than Winwank but with the apps now avilable its a great option. I have used it for years in the past both at home and at work and for servers as well as desktops.

For anyone with enough computer oomph to get it up and use it, good on ya...its a better world, until you wnana run photoshop or other standard apps...

have fun!

Just a thought for all the fence sitters who suspect that the open source software is somehow inferior to bought commercial stuff, and hence the more you pay the better the software.

I have no way of knowing, maybe someone who does will tell us.

I suspect that what we are looking at here is a derivative of the open source Wikipedia type software.

I would also make a guess that it the enormous amount of data contained on this site and that is handled so fast and efficiently, is running on Linux based servers.

The web as we know it would not be a shadow of what it is now, if we didn't have open source software, mostly developed on Linux.

How many of you are viewing this on a Firefox type browser?

These developers are (extra)ordinary guys doing what they love and enjoy, and sharing their knowledge with others. Bit like us really.

Cheers

There are many companies running Linux of one sort or another I have read that NSW state Gov has gone total LUNIX for its servers, politicans probably got the savings in their pay packets.

Linux is used by many major animation companies
Autocad can run on Linux http://architectafrica.com/bin0/news200411111_wine.html
Check out autocad user groups also.

:doh: I am stupid for not getting into it when it first appeared back in the 90's still not loaded on any machine.
My biggest fear is having to teach LOML how to use it I guess.:oo:

We use Linux for all our web servers. Our Database servers are SQL Server so they run Windows.

I tried to run Ubuntu in Virtual PC on Vista however ran across a problem with the mouse not being recognised. I found a fix for it but haven't tried it yet.
