Offered to modify 3 centres for , so far I've gone through 2 carbide tips & 3 ceramic tips and I'm still on the first one. These buggers are HARD. Luckily the storeman at work doesn't know what I'm using the tips for :D :D .

All 3 centres finished, glad I didn't have to pay for the ceramic inserts:D:D. Hope you like them . Sorry the photo's are slightly fuzzy biut I cant use a flash as the shiny finish causes the flash to "wash out" the image and th camera doesn't focus too well under normal indoor lighting.

Cheers

30 mm diameter. They're stock centres, I think got them from Hafco.

John, I road tested the big bugger today. BEWWWWDDDDIFUL. Thank you once again.

I answered Erns question at the turnfest but so everybody knows.

With the size and weight of the timber we turn, a normal No2 Morse taper actually bends at the taper where it goes into the quill. We use an adapter to go up to 3 MT.

The only 3 MT centres available are metal working centres. Unfortunately these only come with a point instead of the ring centres.

This is not bad except for one minor problem. They act like a wedge on the end of the log which in most cases is split anyway but they split it further which can get a bit nerve racking when you are removing material to get a flat or curved top. We have had quite a few snap the end and fall out.

A revolving ring centre of a larger type was needed and that is exactly what John has done.
