I wonder if there is any Australian supplier of rare-earth magnets to use as magnetic catches for cabinet doors. They are easily available from North American woodworking suppliers, but I have not seen them in any Australian catalogue. Bunnings sells magnetic discs but their attraction is wimpish compared to the amazing force that rare-earth magnets exert. I don't actually need any myself, because I picked up a good supply when I was in Canada earlier this year. But I think it would be good if someone stocked them over here.

Jaycar Electronics (http://www.jaycar.com.au/) stock them.

They have them in 3 sizes:
Small: 10mm dia x 3mm - LM-1622 pk4 $10.75
Medium: 25mm dia x 5mm - LM-1618 $14.50
Large: 35mm dia x 5mm - LM-1620 $22.50

They also stock heavy duty ferrite magnets in two different sizes and packs.

Thanks Stephen; I still think the major woodworking suppliers like Carbatec, Mik, and Timbecon should be stocking these magnets.

A guy here at work pulls the magnets out of dead computer hard drives - they are powerful enough to hurt if you put a magnet on each side of your finger.

The upside is the cost (free); the downside is they are irregularly shaped.

I've seen a few WW articles using magnets and these guys usually get a mention.

Rocker,
If you want to get REALLY serious.
Try David Orriel, at Wauchope, near Kew, NSW

Carbatec in Perth used to have them, not seen them recently but there again I haven't really looked :)

The stock at Carbatec and Timbecon is stuck to the steel roof trusses. Those magnets are too strong.

Carbatec in Melbourne have them in stock and I would think that the interstate outlets would have them also.
I use the 10mm diameter magnets which are approximately 20mm long for cabinet doors and they ARE very strong. (Place a magnet on top of a 30mm thick plank and another on the bottom and you'll be surprised at the their strength).

They cost $4.00 each and the next size up are the size of a 10 cent coin and about 3mm thick at $8.00 each and you'll need a crowbar (literally) to seperate them.
