Ronin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122690/)has one of the best car chases ever!

Blues Bros, Bullit, the original Gone in Sixty Seconds and the Itaian job.... the best four but not necessarily in that order. I am sorry but Dorks of Hazzard would not not rate anywhere on a car chase list of mine...

"The Man with the Golden Gun" (James Bond)

Had a chase over a canal from and to rickety bridge remnants, with a midair barrel roll by Bond. IIRC, the credits included computer programmers for the stunt.

Made well before CGI was invented I'm afraid.

Edited to add, not exactly before it was invented but it was still to crude to be used in films, IIRC if you look at the shot just after the car lands on the other side, they did something wrong in continuity that required them to reverse the film, so if you can catch it, the writing on all the signs is backwards for one shot.

yeah, another vote for Bullitt. Just watched it again.

A 68 GT Mustang and a 68 Dodge Charger racing through the streets of San Francisco, old skool. Doesn't get much better than that for me.:smoke1:

I'm surprised that no-one has as yet mentioned the 14 minute long freeway chase from The Matrix Reloaded. They custom built a freeway to film it on.

Cars, motorbikes, ghosts, semi-trailers, samurai swords and a hot chick - what more do you want in a chase?

(looks/sounds much better on DVD with a good sound system...)

Wasn't CG. The computer programming was used to define the optimum shape of the bridge "remnants" to impart the proper twist and allow landing on the far side; also to establish the proper speed of the car. The programmers could have been moonlighting rocket scientists. Haven't seen it for years, so I can't remember any continuity problems. Might be listed in "movie blunders" or some such web site name.

Made with left over film stock and using the directors own car, all the traffic is real. No closed roads.

That wasn't a Ferrari Gra. It was a Mercedes saloon, and the sound was dubbed.

That wasn't a Ferrari. It was a Mercedes, and the sound was dubbed.

There is some argument over what car it was. The director certainly owned a Ferrari and a Merc at the time. Me, I dont care what the car is, just love the footage. It was an underground film for quite some time for obvious reasons. It was finally released on DVD about 3 or 4 years ago. Before that it was secretly passed around car circles. The director did get into some trouble for it, but not a huge amount as they couldn't prove he was going that fast at the time (70's).

I guess technically it isn't a car chase as there isn't anyone following, but its a great piece of film:U

I was going to post it earlier until I saw a picture of the director with the camera mounted to his Mercedes. I'll try to dig it up.

It's a Mercedes 450SEL

Here's a mash up using Google maps where you can view the route he takes whilst watching the video:

Was it "The French Connection" where in the middle of a car chase up a mountain dirt road there was a little car forplay when the yellow Porsche 911 did forward and reverse fkick turns in front of the Alfa MonteCarlo whilst still moving in the same direction? Not putting this chase in for a prize, but it was a nice interlude in the midst of mayhem.
