silentC 10th October 2007, 10:14 AM I know it's only softwood, but you're putting a lot of faith in that hanger bracket, aren't you? :)

350lb beam. Two, 1200lb-capacity clamps. It just looks squirrelly.
pawnhead 10th October 2007, 11:13 AM He's talking about the sheet metal hanger bracket, attached with clouts. Presumably that beam is going to carry a bit of weight on top, and you'd expect to see a more heavy duty connection with bolts, or some sort of housing connection.
Nice spot anyway. Looks like its by a lake.

The HU612MAX shown was specified by the earthquake-code engineer. Rated for around 3000lb.

And it hardly supports anything alone. The beam shown is on a 16" center with the remainder of the floor joists and is only there to support a small cantilevered bay window 6 feet wide that only extends past the rim joists by three feet. Like a lot of these earthquake requirements, you hire a structural engineer who has you build a high chair using 4 X 4's.
But it is the nicest spot on the tree farm next to a 5-acre beaver pond full of trout and salmon:
