Sad day in our house ,we had to have our Alaskan Husky put down today .
18 months ago I found him curled up on our back door step .He didnt want to leave ,he had no collar or rego disc .I took him to the vet and had him checked out , and had his injections done .I then went to the council and registered him in my name . I named him Sitka ,after the old capital of the State of Alaska
He has been my constant companion since and boy do I miss him already . I'm glad he chose us for his new family ,for the short time he was with us he bought much joy and companionship to us .
A week ago Sunday past he got clobbered by a car ,and has been fighting the fight of his life ,but today it was more than I could bear to see him suffer another minute so I had to do the best thing I could do for my mate.
I can't blame the driver , but blame myself ,In a moment of forgetfulness I failed to shut the gate ,he was not a street wise dog and never went out the gate unless on a lead when we went walking .

I brought him home in the ute ( his favourite ride ), and buried him under the big McArthur palm where he used to lay on hot days .

Thanks mate .

I feel for you Woodlee, there is something very special in the unwaivering friendship offered by a good dog. He is a great looking dog and certainly looks happy.

I have a deaf and extremely arthritic kelpie who is 16. 3 years ago I was told by a vet he only had weeks to go as he had a growth in his snout, I cried all day, he is still hanging around getting under my feet and becomming more insollent and stubborn by the day. I dread the day I have to take that trip to the vet.

Took that drive about 6 months ago myself and I feel for you Woodlee. Good on you for giving him a good home for as long as you had him.

I have had to have two best mates put down so I know how you feel. They don't ask for much and give you that big welcome when you get home.

Two weeks ago the boy I have now jumped a six foot gate then a six foot asbestos fence and was missing for probably four hours before I got home. It was another three hours before I found him but I wasn't going to give up looking. Only a dog owner understands.

You'll never replace him as each one is special but a new dog will give you a lot of pleasure. I share your grief.

We are currently renting and not allowed big pets so we have always had a cockatiel who greets us when we come in and talk to while about in the house and one day he sadly died, and it may be different for you but we found ourselves more upset each time we talked to our bird that wasn't there. it's a shock to continually remind yourself that they're not there anymore. If you do decide to adopt another friend you could check out www.winterpaws.com.au they specialise in huskies and malamutes.

Sorry to hear Kev. I had to do that same thing a few weeks ago and it is still raw but in a different way. Like Meggles said, the hard part is remembering all their funny habits and rituals which are no longer there.

Eventually though all you will remember are the good times, chin up.

well if that didn't help, this might. I have had alot of things 2 deal with and sometimes the only thing that helped was this prayer (mind you, I'm not religious)
Learnt this one the hard way.

Grant me the serenity
to change that which i can
to accept that which i can not
and the wisdom to know the difference

you can NOT change the fact that you left the gate open,
you CAN fix your gate soz it shuts automatically for when you get your next puppy.

sorry if it cam out harsh, not meant to.

Been a week since I had him put to sleep and let me tell you the weekend was the hardest of all , I spent both days in my shed doing a couple of small projects ,ocassionally I would turn and look down to check on my mate ,and my heart would sink when I realized he wasn't there .His meals times are the same , he would remind me at exactly six o'clock each day that its time for dinner ,some times just a wet nose on the back of the leg or a gentle touch with a lifted paw , other times he would "speak " as only a Huskie or Malamute can.

Birds I can also understand , I used to breed Cocktiels , Rosellas and budgies a few years ago ,I had one hand raised Cocatiel ,that could talk a house down and swear like a trooper ,he is still missed even though it's been five or six years since he died.

Thanks for the link I will keep it bookmarked for future reference .I will be getting another huskie , but not directly ,although I have three that I'm looking at this week , no guarantee that I will take one though.

That is a good website but it's not the only one, i like it because i am obsessed with Samoyed's, but if you type in huskies rescue page or have a look at links on shelters pages then you will more than likely find specific huskies recue groups in your local area.

I hope you get a another dog. I am desperately waiting till December to see if we have our rental house for another year or so because then i can have my Samoyed.

I'm so excited about getting this dog ,I have had trouble sleeping the last couple of nights.
I started to settle down a bit after loosing Sitka , but now I'm in turmoil again.

I'm thinking of road transport to Adelaide ,with a stop over at my parents place for a few days ,then onto the Ghan (train)straight to Katherine .

Got a quote from Jet Pets today,Canberra to Darwin ,short stop over in Sydney ,then direct to Darwin ($570.00),I will drive up and collect him, it's only a 3 1/2 hr drive.
All the other pet transporters wanted in excess of $700.00 + crate hire.
I tried Canberra to Adelaide(road) ,then train direct here but the railway won't take animals as freight.
I'll post some more when he arrives .

I will drive to Darwin after work (3 1/2 hrs ) ,he arrives in Darwin at 22:45 hrs .
I will give him a walk around and a drink , then drive back home (3 1/2 hrs ).
It goes with out saying that the boss will not see me on Tuesday.
I have been thinking about the meeting all week , and am getting anxious the closer the time comes.
I just hope there are no problems with the transport.

Ahh, Woodlee, old son,

Dogs, dogs, dogs. Apart from a few intervening years in my late teens - early 20's I have lived with dogs some 61 years. They are an integral part of my & dearly beloved's life. We currently have 2 labradors.

The grief one has when a dog passes away is really only somthing only a dog owner can relate to. It does not get easier, but more to the point is that you come to realise that the death of anything is just part of the rhythem of life.

I have buried some really great dogs, for over they years I have done a lot of duck shooting [now banned] and have spent some truly memorable times afield with great dogs, mates and my son [aged 4 on his first duckshoot]. It is interesting to note when I get togethjer with my old duckshooting mates, the conversation invarialby turns to dogs, and the stories we have about allows us to recall vividly times when things were mcuh simpler.

I have also come to know, Woodlee, that whilst I have had some cracker dogs over the years, each successive dog has become better, because I have become better at training them.

Don't muck about, get yourself another dog, pump some effort into him and you will be rewarded a thousand times over.

We have our little dog cemetery in the back yard, and still a tear can be shed for a dog gone 20 years or more.

Whilst ever you have a memory of Sitka he will not die, to that end he has become immortal

All true Colin.
I spent most of Sunday building stone work around Sitka's resting place with tear filled eyes .
I carved his name into a piece of limestone slab .This stone is very hard ,like glass and wore out three carbide cutters doing it , but it was worth it .

Shame about the duck hunting down your way ,at least the NT govt recognises the value of it and takes the time to survey bird numbers each year and then decides to either have a season or not, depending on the previous wetseason and bird breeding.

This why we pay taxes to get some sort of service from our Govts. Not for Govts to say its too hard well just ban it altogether.Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the kind words.

Kev ..... I am so glad to read that you are getting a new dog, I read the tread a few weeks ago and felt your pain .... Sitka will never be replaced but you are doing the right thing by saving yet another dog. There is something special about taking care of an otherwise unwanted / unsuitable animal and I am sure that you will be rewarded in spades.

Woodlee,

Yes duckshooting is banned down here. Once upon a time if you wanted to shoot a duck, that's what you did.

Then, you'd better have a licence to do that....OK get a licence, yer pays yer money and nothing changed. Shot the same sort of ducks in the same places.

Then, you'd better sit a test before we give you a licence OK, I can do that, but I tell you if you had not spent at least 5-10 years afield you would have been flat out passing the test. A quick flick of a bird on a a screen for a couple of seconds and you have say yes or no if it is a target specie. Paid more money shot the same sort of ducks in the same places

Then, you'd better have a firearm licence.OK, pays yer money, yer gets yer licence. Pay more money and we got to shoot the same sort of ducks in the same places.

Ban duck shooting. Nothing changes, we get to...................:o

Governments are great at taking away your rights and selling them back to you as priveledges. So mate you are not missing anything.

Might have to come up to the territory...........with the dogs, of course

All the best

My duck seasons ended progressively ,I used to live in stage one of Kakadu National park , we used to shoot ducks at what is known as Bull swamp and Magella point .It was on aboriginal land , it was leased by the national Parls service and that ended that .
We then moved to the West Alligator area ,which was mostly Crown land ,a wild area with lots of shallow swamps and billabongs ,this was taken by National Parks and willdlife service as Stage 2 of Kakadu ,duck shooting ended there.

Then finally stage three of Kakadu took away the last areas where we would frequent ,Not only hunting ducks but feral pigs ,donkeys and buffalo.

Sad days indeed ,when Govts lock away huge tracts of land for the international tourists at the expense of their own citizens ,but then I guess the holy dollar is more important than the needs of your own people.
At least the NT Govt has had the foresight (no pun intended) to set aside hunting reserves for the use of hunters .

Well after a long drive we finally have Hutch at home .
We arrived in Darwin at 10:15 pm , we had a quick meal (try finding a place to eat in Darwin at 10:00PM on a Monday night),so it was just a quick chinese take away at Uncle Sams ( good food and quite inexpensive and 24 hr service).
Then slip over to the Airport freight teminal and make some enquiries ,the plane arrived 10mins before we got there so we had to wait about 20mins for the cargo to be unloaded and be delivered to the frieght terminal .Great timing, had a smoke and a chin wag with one of the fellas.

Then the freight arrived and the guy I was chatting to went straight in and brought the dogtainer to the front ,I signed the consignment note and Hutch was mine.

I could see this white faced dog looking through the mesh of the cage , he didnt seem stressed at all .There was a large A4 envelope taped to the container with all Hutches medical history and some tips on caring for Huskys.

I clipped Sitkas lead on to the collar ring and led Hutch out ,I walked him around for 20mins or so to let him stretch and do what dogs do.A drink of water and he was ready to go.

No fuss straight onto the back seat and and with a look that said l"ets go" we were on our way home.
On the way out we stopped to fuel up ,my wife bought a pack of dry dog food , so we gave him a feed.

The drive was uneventful , apart from a couple of occasions where Hutch decided he wanted to drive ,We stopped at Pine Creek for a stretch and another walk then continued on our way .
We finally arrived home at 2:30 am and I spent the next two hours walking Hutch around and introducing him to the place.
Finally putting him on a long tether and getting him to settle down on his bed, I went to my own bed and slept like I was dead.

This morning I was awake at 6:30am and I got up to check on the dog , my eyes felt like they were on sticks ,he was sleeping peacefully underneath his bed ,typical husky , must have that closed in security feeling..
I spent most of the day getting to know our new dog and walking him on lead and just seeing what he is like ,I guess I was being scrutinised as well .
He is a fine dog and has had some obedience training and knows a few commands , I just need to reinforce some of the training .

I guess it will take a little time for us to get to know each other ,but already he has made the loss of Sitka a little easier to bear ,and has made himself quite at home.
I will take some pics on the weekend and post here.

Off to the vet on Friday for a check over and some heart worm treatment , and a bath on Saturday for flea and tick treatment.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement ,I'm glad I decided to adopt this fellow and have no regrets for doing so.

Cheers ,
Kev.

All is well ,Hutch is adjusting very well and has made himself at home.
He started sleepng out side at night ,but started "singing" at 2.00am in the morning so has been given a spot at my bedside.
The missus is not happy about that ,but he dosent snore like she does.

We have been walking 5-8 klms each night ,and I made up a 40' lead so I can take him to the oval and let him run . As you know PTC Huskys are reknown escapeists so no free running on unfenced ovals .

I have been busy getting things cleared up around the place for the wet season , putting stuff away and securing stuff around the yard in case of cyclonic conditions ,so no pics yet .

Hope to get some soon.

Looks like a great place to take a walk ptc , nearest beach to me is 320klms away.
Its been 40c for the last three days ,I think Hutch is feeling it a bit .He has a swimming pool now so he can cool off during the day .As soon as I get home I dry him off and he shoots straight indoors into the airconditioning .

Got some materials being delivered tomorrow so I can raise the height of the front fence to 6 feet then he can have the run of the yard .

Hutch is a very well behaved dog and seems to have no "baggage" as far as temperment and bad habits .He is very calm and friendly and accepts every one he meets.
He likes to spend most of his time inside where its cooler , venturing out every so often on "patrol" to check out what's happening .His patrols last from 10 -15 mins every hour or so , he does a quick recce around the yard ,and takes a longer look across the road where he knows a cat resides.

He loves his daily walks ,and goes into excitement mode when I pick up his lead .He runs to the gate and sits there until I put his lead on and we exit for our walk.

On the website and in the booklet the kennel sent with him , Hutch was described as an outside dog ,but he just took to being an inside dog almost immediately.

Hes a great dog and has quickly adapted ot our life style and won our hearts as soon as we laid eyes on him.

I'm really glad I adopted him ,best thing I have every done ,and would highly recommend rescue adoption to any one. The hardest part is choosing the dog , if you can spend some time with them before you adopt that would be best .In my case I had to rely on the judgement of the kennel where he was fostered ,but I am glad to say that the kennel owner has an very good eye for the breed and gave an accurate description.

I'm very proud of Hutch ,when we walk , he just ignores the barking fence charging dogs and continues to look forward as he walks past.No pulling on the lead and trying to fight.
Dogs that rush out at us through open gates, he spins around and stares them down ,only once did he grab a Chiuawa (sp?) (you know those mexican rat dogs ) by the head and give it a flick .This ankle biting excuse for a dog (every man to his own I suppose) was very persistant and pursued us up the street for a long way way before Hutch's patience wore out.
I'm guessing the little dog was lucky as Hutch could have easily crushed its skull.

I have to thank you again Meggles for posting that link ,If it wasn't for you I would probably wouldn't have found Hutch and would be a miserable old goat by now .

Cheers

Beautiful dog . Love the colouring.

Dont know what it is with Huskys ,Hutch has a nice raised bed ,but he prefers to sleep underneath it ,like Suki in the cupboard. Sitka did the same thing ,must be a security thing.

Ah yes the moulting ,I think Hutch has started ,yesterday when we got back from the river and he had dried off ,I raked his coat out and it was coming out in clumps.
Will have to keep it up ,unless we want a hair storm in the house.
The birds like the wool for nesting .
I asked my missus if she would grow a wart on her nose and then I would get her a spinning wheel so she could spin the wool into yarn and make wooly socks.

Cant print what she said in reply.

If you really want it I'll save it , bale and send it to you.

Glad to hear about the nonwarts as well.

Thanks PTC , Same to you and your family.
Got another bag of wool off Hutch this morning ,already sent one off to Ray last week .
I'm going to send another when I can get to the post office.
Hutch has just about done with moulting.
He looks like he's lost about 3 kilos in weight.
Not sure if his under coat will grow back ,there is another Husky here in town that lost his wool at the first moult and it never grew back.
Time will tell I guess.

This (photo is machine called a drum carder) it cleans and straightens the fibre out its blended with merino at this stage to also keep the dog fibre together.

is a spinning wheel involved ? Yes next stage will take WIP pics of that too

Suki still not blowing yet (must be our coooool weather.)! No problem when ever Pete as said she has enough to do the 4 beenies at present.

Hi Pete
No problem Sue completed all plying today next stage wash (this helps set the twist) hung out to dry and then knit.

The carder was bought from a spinners guild member its hand crank I want to fit an old sewing machine motor to it manufactured think by Ashford NZ

The spinning wheel is a Wee Peggy another NZ company made them Sue's had for 12 years also 2nd hand bought from a lady from Armidale when we lived in Tamworth, approx 30 years old still solid as a rock (although last night I noticed two cracks forming in the main base) more repair work maybe hope :~.

she has two other wheels an Ashford Traditional she hope to be selling and an Upright Sickinger (not sure on the spelling) Its made in the Coff's Harbour hinterland Dorigo area guy still makes them a member past away and Sue was offered it at a bargain price.

Where abouts in the UK Pete have relations in Durham area.
