I am looking at buying an inverter arc welder to weld 10mm plate, wondering if anyone has any suggestions on which brand is better & would do the job easily

Mate, you can get stick/tig inverter imports from slacks creek. Awsome little units - unbreakable. They have a couple in the boilys shop at eagle farm tafe and they are a good unit to use. My mate has also bought a 200A version of them.
A 160A will be about $500 and a 200A is about $700. They come with all leads even a tig torch setup. Only thing is that they do not come with a gas reg. But if your only looking at doing stick then this wont worry ya. A 160A unit will probably do the trick for up to 10mm plate.

If they come with warranty back up and spare parts are available go for it. If not give it a miss.
If the kids at Tafe can't stuff them up they may be alright.
Why not give the TAFE a phone call and ask about them.

i own and love my inverter its a rehm booster 170
made in germany and avial in australia i have pushed this little baby to 18mm plate on a bob cat buckett will run low hyg rods no problem cost is around $1400 ish

If it going to be used hard and often as in making a living ,or constantly in a hobby capacity spend the bucks.

Kemppi,Fronios,Rehm are manufacturers that have put the dollars into understanding what they produce and making a decent product.

Others,too often, are just me too copy cats,producing machines to a price,but not a quality. Price does determine quality.

Supervisors Rehm sounds good as its


A - German -some research may be needed but German made is a very good indicator
B- Around the price you should expect to pay
C- Will do what you want with spare capacity

yeah graham is right i tried a few machines before setteling on this one
your supplier should set the machine up so you can play with it you dont buy a car without driving it

Hmmm, I've been looking at Tig/inverters on Ebay at around $500. You sound like I should keep my money Grahame??? Do I really need to look at spending around $1400 to get a good one? I could probably stretch to $800. Maybe more if I'm right in thinking that I'd then be able to sell my Mig and stick that I already have (mind you they're both bottom of the market and so probably only worth a few $$$$).

Sorry its hard to keep up with the posts at times.

Sometimes its a hard thing to come up with the dollars, but the cost is soon forgotten.If you don't spend those dollars you you always have a constant and reoccurring reminder that the machine you did purchase is not up to the job in some way.

I did a quick google on the Unimig but its very limited as it DC only .I was unable to bring the Unimig site up to see if the machine is kosher. If the machine is genuine(edit -it appears to be,- found it else where at a retailer) and you are happy with the DC only( No tig on Aluminium) go ahead as it will have warranty -but spares availability will need checking.

Thanks Grahame and your right, it is hard to keep up with the prolific posts on this site.
Aluminium welding is one of the things I wanted to get out of buying such a welder so I guess I'll wait till I'm a bit more financial.
