Hello everyone,

Here's a tool for those of you who add texture, carve, burn, sand, or decorate turnings off the lathe. It is relatively simple to make from RHS, a few nuts, bolts and steel rod. As you can see from the pics you can rotate or adjust the job in most any direction, yet it is ridged and stable to work with. I have two base stand options, one bolted to my work bench and one freestanding (to take anywhere). I borrowed this idea from Goulburn turner Andrew Gittoes who in turn borrowed it from another turner. It works a treat and over many years has proven to be very useful.

Thanks Fredo. Neat idea.

AFAIK Bruce Leadbeater (sp?) was one of the first guys to do this.

Woodcut now have a commercial version to fit to a lathe or bench.

Yes, I hummed and hahed over one, pretty good value at $200, but decided it would be the start of slippery slope :( ... to turquoise inlays and such

Fredo :UI like the simple construction Fredo :2tsup: - no need for a metal lathe as in the one I was planning along the same lines as my Dad's (BIL scored that one :~). Admittedly, Dad's was all locked by just 1 lever but I can actually see some benefits in having 2 locking points - added to list:B

Have been thinking on the idea for some time. At $200 I think I shall build my own......got a lathe to do it with, so will duplicate or something similar.

Yes, I've got an 'agricultural' alternative. A 30 x 3.5 bolt in the vise.

(Bolt was only $8 from the local fasteners place).
