I have a thread over at projectguitar.com about using CA glue to fix some dodgy fretwork (see here (http://projectguitar.ibforums.com/index.php?showtopic=32820&st=0)) and the suggestion is to use thin CA glue and accelerator. Does anyone kow where to find these products in melbourne?

I know i can get them from www.stewmac.com, but i'd prefer not to wait that long.

Also, to those luthiers here, i am aware that removing and refitting the offending frets is probably the best method for fixing this, and i'm discussing this option at pg in the above thread.

Carrolls (http://www.cws.au.com/index.html), Carbatec (http://www.carbatec.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=index) and Woodsmith (http://www.thewoodsmith.com.au/thewoodsmith/) stock the Hotstuff brand

Thanks for that. The red (HS-4) version seems to be the thinnest of their range, have you used this before? How thin is it?

Hobby model shops stock all kinds of CA. try to avoid the use of the accelerator unless using medium to thick for making fillets, it sets the CA of to fast weakening the bond, aside from leaving an ugly white mess.

cheers

Hmmm interesing. The accelerator was specifically recommended by someone who had used it for the same purpose as me, but i'll be sure to test everything on scrap before using it in anger :o.

Even with the cheapest and nastiest of CA's, it doesn't take so long to go off without accelerator that it can't be held by hand for the duration.

CA goes 'off' with moisture & heat, so a bit of 'heavy breathing' can speed things up. Don't drown the joint either, it sets strongest & fastest in a thin layer - if you want to fill gaps, use multiple applications or one of the thick 'gap filling' formulas.

Most hobby shops that sell models also sell 'Zap-a-Gap' who are HotStuff's main competition, also their 'kicker' or accelerator. If you want an Industrial glue, look for engineering shops that sell 'LocTite' brand - they make great CA's & you can get them in bottles around 100ml for much the same price as 20ml of hobby glue. Store bottles in the fridge to prolong their life, if you are not a frequent user, then an airtight jar with some moisture absorbing sachets will keep it even longer. Just remember to let it warm up before use & don't drink it ;-)
