It's a well-written ad, includes some tools which might be Henry Taylor, and maybe the Sher was a Taiwanese made version of the MC900. The price is high but not outrageous if the tools were HTs.

Could be Hamlet as well, handle shape, size and colour is pretty well spot on

Just looking at the pic, not a really clear one at that, I'd call it a Grizzly Model 5979 12" x 36" lathe. I recently sold Old Griz, but not for anything near that kind of money.

I thought so too. Not too bad if they are :)

Looking at the tools, only four may have any real value. One is bent and t'other hasn't enough meat. Allow $200 for them and considering that the lathe looks well maintained (or has seen little use) I think that although the buyer hasn't got a real bargain they haven't been ripped off.

If a decent chuck was bundled with it, then it'd be a worthwhile buy...

Flagon of port would fix that; give you both bowel turning and a decent chuck ;-}

Here's something interesting:

They had a good rep.

I'm told Len Smith has the rights now.

And 'tis only down the road from here! :oo: Geeze, how could I not know about this 'un? I wonder if they'll swap for an MC-900 or three? :p

I've heard the same.

If that's a Grizzly 5979 (apparently no longer in their product line), it's an almost exact twin sister to the Harbor Freight 34706, which also seems to be an almost exact twin of the MC900; the only difference I've seen (based on very limited informal research) is the colour: green 34706, blue MC900(?) - even has the same yellow warning label on the tailstock.

My HF34706, bought August 2006 with newspaper coupon and store-opening special, was less than US$200 including sales tax.
