Wooden Vase

I'm rather new to wood carving.
I thought I'd brave it, and post a few things Iv'e made in the last couple of weeks..
Starting with a Wooden Vase I made for dried flowers.

i like the vase & the way the leaf wraps itself around it
what type of timber did you use
and is it stained to make the different colours

Its Pine with two seperate Stains applied. (Cabots)
Jarrah is used for background Colonial Baltic is on the leaf.

Picture Below is using Colonial Baltic stain. (Its sitting on a rubbish bin to give a bit of feel to the size of it.) But I was dissapointed with the results.
