I am looking for input from member's on chainsawmill cutting speed's . This should give a lot of people an idea as to how fast or slow a chainsawmill really is . No story's please , just info .
I slabbed up a quarter of a Monterey pine log(radiata pine) some time back now , average width of the slab I ripped was , 14 1/2" - 15" x 9'2" , time was 2 3/4 minute's , 3.27 Ft a minute . Chain used was Full comp Carlton ripping chain 3/8 x .063 sharpened at 15deg's x 45deg's , Stihl Ms660 91.5cc , 20" bar . Cheers MM

thats an excellent question . no easy answer !same tree sharp chain can be faster or slower. some factors are -chain skip or lucas profile , many different types ,- how its sharpened depth gauges set for hard wood or soft wood. -persistence of operator and how fit they are .species and cleanliness of logs , etc etc . all things being right between 2 to 6 cubes per day. cheers bob

here goes

timber - width(mm) - saw - bar length - chain type(angle)

spotty - 600mm - stihl 034 - 25" - skip (30*) - 5.3"/min:doh:

spotty -600mm - stihl 034 - 25" - skip (15*) - 5"/min (smother finish):~

spotty - 600mm - stihl 034 - 25" - saftey (25*) - 4"/min:C

camphor - 300mm - stihl 034 - 20" - skip (30*) - 3'/min:U

bloodwood - 300mm - stihl 034 - 20" - saftey (25*) - 3'/min

mahogany - 500mm - stihl 034 - 20" - skip (30*) - 2.5'/min

in my experiance a smaller angle dose not increce speed but creates a smother finish.

will be milling a swamp cypress over the weekend so will time it with diferant chains for you. (if i get time)
