I've got a spare 200watt bass stack sitting around doing nothing, (I also have a 400 watt stack).

Seeing as the 200 is pretty beat up from being used and abused, i was thinking of building it into a new stack and head cabinet (something that looks good), adding a rack mounted effects unit and using it as a guitar stack.

Obviously there must be a difference between Bass and Guitar amps? What exactly will happen, The box is a CRATE 15 inch pair.

All sorts of stacks use a 15 inch speaker, and on the back of the cab it is branded as for guitar and bass 600watt max?

The amp has normal bass mid and treble controls and a five channel eq and a clipper,

Can anyone see any reaon why I cant use this amp as a guitar amp???
Even if I have to adjust the eq to filter out any designed bass frequency bias?

Cheers,

there is very little difference between a guitar and bass amp. the main differences are the tone stacks on a bass work with a lower frequency so are a bit different. the speakers on a guitar amp wont work very well for bass and may fail (the low frequencies can overheat the voice coil). playing a guitar through a bass amp is fine. often the speakers will have a treble rolloff lower than a guitar amp, and will probably have a response curve a bit different from that of a guitar, but that wont cause any problems, just might sound different from what your used to in a guitar amp.

im assuming the amp is solidstate. probably be a great amp to run pedals into, but probalby a bit too uncoloured for guitar use without a pedal.

if its not what you are after, try running the output into a guitar cab (make sure to get the right impedence)

remember, fender bassmans were bass amps, but theyre being used by gui tarplayers all the time, and are very rarely used for bass these days. marshall amps are very similar to the 5f6a (a tweed bassman). their first amp virtually copied the bassman. their modern amps still have alot owing to the bassman.

Cheers black labb, Pretty much what I thought.

The stack cab is a Crate and It does say for guitar and bass, so I was always sure that the cab would be ok.
I was more concerened about the actual amp wether or not playing a guitar into it would somehow damage it, I don't know much about amps and wasn't sure if It made a difference.

Didnt Hendrix use bass guitar stacks?

You wont hurt the amp at all, its only the input stages that vary between amps for differing purposes. Long as you keep impedance load within spec you'll have no probs.
The speakers may be a different story...

I agree that there is less difference then many people would have you believe.

And yep.... the fender bassman in some circles was once the rythum guitar amp of choice.

Plug it in & crank it up mon........you might like it.

particularly if you like a ballsy sound thater than a scream.

besides it is your right...... no your obligation.... to use what you have if it suits........ isnt that muso tradition.

cheers

Ps I've had it going today, sounds pretty cool, the eq has a massive range and I can really get a balsy blues tone off it.

Hav'nt had it cranked yet- I drives the guitar a butt load harder than my bass.
