Howdy All!

(Click here for an Index to my forum (http://boats-storerdesign.blogspot.com/2009/03/table-of-contents-for-michael-storer_31.html))
(Click here for general advice on boatbuilding materials and methods (http://www.storerboatplans.com/Faq/faqindex.html))

Well, I asked Neil whether it would be possible ... and Yes! This will be the world wide forum for discussions about my boat plans, how to build them, events and trouble shooting.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/144/379091135_dac1a798cd.jpg

Like I say on my website ...
http://www.storerboatplans.com
... my purpose has always been to get people excited about building, using, or just learning about wooden boats - whoever they are designed by, built by etc

Questions to do with a Storer Boat Plan put the Boat Design first in the name.

eg BETH Centreboard - fibreglassing problem

Where they relate to a particular building method give the name of the part first

eg Mast - making it round or
Rudder blades - timber choice

But don't worry about it too much - I can edit the name later!

One of the great things is I will be able to move some of the existing threads that deal specifically with my plans into this area. And it also allows different threads to cover different aspects of the same boats, or different building projects of the same design. Ipso Facto - better visual organisation for easier reference!

My plan is to keep this section pretty specific, so that the normal business of the other wooden boat sub-forums can continue unabated and unabashed!

Any existing storerboat threads can continue at the moment and I will gradually move the most relevant ones into this section.

ALSO .... consider joining this forum - it is free and being a member (http://www.woodworkforums.com/register.php) means that you can see easily what new posts have happened since your last visit so you can catch up quick.

Best wishes to all
Michael.

Well let me be the second to congratulate you then Mik! ( and great decision on your behalf too Neil!)

Does that mean the rowboat goes here? :D:D:D

You look like having the record for the world's longest running single thread in the Eureka one anyway. See how I happily slip it over to the master?

There's a pic of you back in the original post as I recall, just before you started giving me those looks!

Yes Robert!

Any questions about Storer Boats or discussions that come out of what I write or the building methods I tend to use in my plans.

For example If you have a question about BETH (which I know you are interested in) ... just "start a new topic" and call it something useful - like "Beth - questions before I buy the plans".

And then the discussion can start!

The Pocket Guide to Dinghy Sailing by Malcolm McKeag.

My only complain so far is that it only has a 2 page glossary & it is CHOKERS full of boat & sailing jargon.

Part 2 on Dinghy Racing is just about totally incomprehensible because of all the jargon, particularly the bits about The Start & The Rules. :oo:

Before starting you may luff as you please (40) except that you may not go above close hauled if the windward yacht is forward of mast abeam. If your luff affects more than one other (often the case before starting) you may not go above close hauled unless all are aft of mast abeam (40 and 38.6).
If any of the yachts to windward hail 'mast abeam', you must respect the hail even if you disagree and protest if you think fit (38.4) Since there is no proper course before starting, you only have to bear away on to a close hauled course (40) to fulfill your obligations.

Yeap, got that....:? what was the question again?

Don't worry Cliff, the rules get updated every 4 years - so the book is so out of date you will still be in the wrong on the start line.

What year was it published?

Just checked ... it was 1985 so it is almost 6 sets of updates out! They did decide to move to a simplified rule set with fewer exceptions to standard situations about 12 years ago.

Cheers Ding!

More than a little spoilt! It was terribly good of Neil!

Actually even more spoilt because a lot of my contribution has been spurred by the contribution of others. The obvious one is the Biting Midge and Daddles and yourself and woodbutcher and aloneonbeach and walesy and Cliff and catsailor and all the people involved in the PDRacer mayhem and and, but I'd be up all night listing all the people who have built up the wooden boat section. In fact as you know in particular I am quite a recent arrival compared to some!

Now I have to work out how to use my magic powers to move things around without stuffing anything up!

(if I dare) I'll do some reading first then move the Eureka, GIS and PDR threads under this one. Assuming I can do it without messing up existing links!

Sigh

Howdy All,

I have just spent the last couple of hours moving any STRONGLY storerboat threads into this sub-forum.

If there are any others that you think should be here - or any that you think should not be because they are too general please give me a yell and I will have a look at it.

One person whose posts I miss are Dopeydriver (Rob, where are you) whenever he asked a question you never knew where it would lead, but it usually led somewhere quite generally useful.

Best wishes to all

OK- just looked on Google maps, wow it looks like a wonderful place...National Parks, and lots of water. Is it just me or does Wallis Lake look like a great stomping ground for a Goat?

Forster/Tuncurry - NSW biggest retirement village....
Lake Wallis is a great stomping ground for almost any boat.
Shallow draft better - opens up a -lot- more lake & back-waters.
Lots of sandy shallows. And some rocky ones...
Same applies to the Myall Lakes to the south.

And lots of Oyster leases.

We have been coming here for Christmas since my Aunt and Uncle moved here after buying a Motel.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SVBQgJkUi8I/AAAAAAAAGhE/t_kRM5dB_vA/s640/PC230050.JPG

Originally it made its money from oysters, prawns and general ocean seafood - a sleepy little town with about the best fish and chip shops you could imagine. Fishing co-ops and a small bunch of local shops. It was a tourist town basically with cement board (fibro to us) Motels with wooden floorboards and three windows.

In the main hotel street there used to be a bunch of holiday flats called Eros 1, Eros 2 and Eros 3 near the cinema where I once saw a McHales Navy double thinking I was about to see Spielburg's first film "Duel".

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SU_p2hgbHKI/AAAAAAAAGXU/FVYFCcsSZKE/PC220100.JPG

We alway made sure that our family hired one of the old clinker Putt Putt dinghies for a day when we we were young and headed up the lake for an explore and picnic. So I have first hand experience of why the people who truly love them called the enginge "Stupid Turners". I spend a lot of time hanging over the side pushing the water around with my hands and other body parts. I wasn't a sailor then. but maybe part of the fascination was from here. They also hired out very heavy fibreglass canoes.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SU_qG_ve05I/AAAAAAAAGXk/ER_FRZjMnJI/PC220104.JPGOne of the boat hire places had boats called Grumpy, Sleepy, Doc etc .. all about 16ft and an 18footer called Snow White.

It certainly was a holiday town - very sleepy the rest of the time. Lakes on one side - better for fishing and small boats because the area is not really huge - a PDRacer would be more fun than a Goat ... you could see everything in one day on the Goat (ok .. maybe two - the Myall lakes would be lots of fun. Lots of shallow and quite strong tidal currents. And don't get lost among the oyster leases!

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SVBTQFwpbCI/AAAAAAAAGk4/ccleszN0q_o/s640/PC230087.JPG

It went into a state of hypertourism with the local developer types wanting to create a Miami by the sea. The change in housing style was indicative.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SVBYiAI16jI/AAAAAAAAGsA/EVrsQlFLeeU/s128/PC230166.JPG

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SVBYdUhL1ZI/AAAAAAAAGr4/TJT9_8hT2VI/s128/PC230165.JPG

Now like AJ says ... the economy subsists on a mix of superannuation and pension cheques. Lots of urban development around the lakes, a K-mart and big supermarkets to the North of the town and an average population age of ... maybe about mine. The boat hire businesses are a little bit marginal now so it is even hard to hire a tinnie. The canoes are now in plastic and still crap to paddle!

Still a nice place to visit. Interesting thing is all the people who live here are sun shy and spooked by skin cancer ... or live here anyhow ... or too old ... so the old OZ beach culture has disappeared. Very few of the locals now hang around on the beach putting hats and sunscreen on their kids and handing out sandwiches and walking to the shops for an icecream like we did.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_3RD0luq23ZI/SVBWk-jZfUI/AAAAAAAAGpU/JRJpYaLYRcc/s640/PC230136.JPG

However hang around on the beach a little and the people there are doing much the same thing as our extended family did ... you hear Chinese, Arabic, South American accented Portuguese and Spanish, Thai, Hindi. They walk their toddlers in the shallows and I am sure tell their kids "you can't go swimming until an hour after you have eaten or you will get cramps and die" just like my mum told everyone (and still does).

I find this amazing ... how do people who have moved from all over the world know how families should use beaches - is there a course they have to do??? It is really a case of the country shaping the people.

Amazing and wonderful.

Best wishes
MIK

Hi MIK!

Spooky! I was holidaying at Smith's Lake (and deciding to start sailing again after gazing at a Mirror, a repeatedly capsizing Laser <grin> and some Hobie Cats while sitting in "Frothy Coffee", the local boat hire/boathouse/coffee shop) around the time that you were over at Forster. It's a lovely neck of the woods up there.

Also had a nice time fishing (mostly undersized, Smith's is apparently fished out), some paddling in a horrible plastic kayak and being towed behind a motor boat on a rubber "blob" at circa 30 mph (I *didn't* come off :).

I also had a terrible time with Internet access, and blamed it on Vodafone: connection was mostly non-existant, and when latched, painfully slow, like watching paint dry, only *a lot* slower. Nice to know that I wasn't the only one! The phone side was out most of the time too, which was a problem for my employers as they were urgently trying to contact me (not so much for me - until I eventually found the delayed txt). I blame Telstra ;).

I found the GIS and the Oz woodworking forum, during one of the rare moments that the phone picked up the GPRS signal, whilst I was attempting to search (unsuccessfully, fortunately :) for Mirror & NS14 plans. I joined the forum right away, but decided to leave posting questions about the GIS until I got back to Sydney with broadband access and a real keyboard - the iPhone has its points, but typing one fingered has its limits. The GPS worked and was spot on, though.

In fact, the bad internet access may have led me to finding the GIS sooner rather than later, although you never really know.

Alex.

Howdy,

Some of you are aware that my brother gave me a whole lot of frequent flyer points that have to be gotten rid of by the end of the month.

Well ... worked out what to do with them AND fix my internet access problem at the same time.

I am going to Taiwan for five weeks or maybe a bit longer. Will do some studying of Chinese which is fun ... take lots of pics of boats (and maybe put together some interviews if I can run into the right people)

But I will have a personal broadband connection for my whole stay .. which means better comms and more updating of the website and this forum. And paradoxically more time to work on my design stuff.

Be back in contact about the 28/29th. And may be able to check my email in transit.

Michael

I spent the long weekend relaxing in Tas after a nervous and busy four weeks in the fire area. All the ply i had to build a rough punt for the youngest (32 y/onow, oh my gawd) was used to close in and ember proof the carport while i got to ride around a lot on a BRT ( Big Red Truck).

Thank goodness no near things at home or on the truck ( blacking out is hard, heavy, boring, dangerous [falling trees] and dirty but it worked), but number one son had the flames 300 metres away from his back door which is quite close enough anyway.

Bad news travels fast, eh? I hear you got puddled by a little black duck with a lug sail (grin)

Back to Tas. In my travels, i saw trailered up alongside the Living Boat Trust shed in Franklin the most beautiful and dangerously quick looking boat i have ever seen. Some intensive research indicates it was once a Bolger folding schooner in Goolwa but is now unfoldable. It looks about 40' long bowsprit to rudder. A cute system of levers is installed so that the tiller travel is reduced.

Am I right in thinking this is a suicide machine, that I am at least 30 years too old to be even thinking about buying it, and that the raider you are drawing is not dissimilar in raison d'etre. The boat in Tas is fully restored and bristol fashion and for sale. Any ideas of what it would bring?

What do you have in plan for a smaller, one-up schooner version ( lug sailed (grin) that i could dream about building and sailing and embarrassing lasers with?

Nemo

Howdy Nemo,

For a good long rundown on the vices and virtues of the schooner have a look at
Tim Fatchen's Light Schooner page (http://www.ace.net.au/schooner/index.htm).

It is a shorter brother.

As someone who grew up in Adelaide and spent a lot of time down the Port, this is very upsetting. I knew that the State government was trashing the working port and turning it into yet another glass-and-granite yuppy warren, but didn't know that it had gone quite that far. Big business doesn't give a hoot about ordinary folks. My thoughts go out to Mr Hackett and his former employees. And it seems to be very hard to get the mainstream media to sit up and take an interest. I can understand more now, possibly, why MIK appears to be shipping anchor to certain extent.

It's all cetainly revealing our values as a society.

The same thing is happening over here in Sydney, although the concept of (at least land-based) marine heritage seems to be slighly more alive. Elsewhere in this joint, however, if it isn't a develoment site, it's rapidly turned into one, and the Devil take the hindmost. Very frustrating.

How to fight against Big Money?

This deserves a thread all of its own.

MIK ?

Silly thing is that closing these slipways eliminates the very infrastructure the marina
occupants require to maintain their expensive toys. There are now virtually no
facilities around metro Adelaide where the non yacht club marina occupants can slip
their boats for a bottom clean. Likewise the commercial boats. I understand there
are just one or two marina style hoists left. Anything larger than those limited capacity
hoists must pay a premium to use RAYS slip or go around to the Spencer Gulf ports.

Howdy,

I am having some internet connection issues at the moment so my response might be a little slow.

I am just changing wireless broadband ISPs having just about gone into strangling mode with DODO which runs on the Optus mobile network. Their performance was so poor that one of the major computer magazines refused to review them earlier in the year in a round up of that segment of the market.

Now tossing up between Telstra and Three.

HOpe to resolve in a few days.

We've been having a bad run with Optus' broadband for the last few months - they have at least been giving us the odd free month, but it really doesn't make up for the loss of speed and connections. We'd go to Exetel and ADSL2+ if we could (run by techies for techies) but for some weird reason they don't do the Hornsby area...

I've heard bad things about iinet, but no personal experience, and wouldn't touch Telstraaaa with a 40 ' barge pole - but I'd better stop there before I get permanently booted ;). When I compare my first memories of the internet about 20 years ago at Adel. Uni., and that of today - well, I have to be polite: 20 years ago it screamed along (although that was using goold ol' text/terminal interfaces before the days of the web, javascript, bots, spam, YouTube &c.). There was a chance to get it right in Oz and it looks as though it might have been squandered...

Cheers,
Alex.

I am back in Adelaide for those who had not noticed.

I am changing my work schedule as I have realised I am far too easily seduced by this forum - a good thing as it means it is good fun for me too.

But from now I am going to update the forum and answer emails at the end of the day rather than the beginning.

This way it makes sure I do design work every day in the mornings and leave the more fun bit for the evenings. The design is fun but the payoff tends to be later when I release the plans and can start discussing and promoting them.

So design is fun
Talking and posting on the net and email is more fun.

Catch you later in the day.
Best wishes

Howdy,

Sorry about my lack of appearance recently. Things have been pretty tough over the last few months both inside and outside the boat design thing.

I hope it is all simplifying now. The most recent was a virus infection on my website, but I think I have fixed that now - it was only on the Michael Storer Wooden Boat Plans|Wooden and Plywood Boat Plans for Amateur Boatbuilders – Excellent Performance, Simple Construction, DETAILED Step by Step Instructions Australia, USA, UK, Hungary, S. Africa (http://www.storerboatplans.com/wp) section and I had to disinfect it and work out how to make it harder in future.

Anyway ... hope I am back a bit more often now.

On January 2nd I pull the tarps from the NeD and see if after three years it is still there.

Aim is to have it with a wet bum at Goolwa wooden boat fest late Feb, emblazoned with your given name for it (never ending dory) if that's OK with you.

Seems sort of appropriate to launch near to where the keel was laid all those years ago.

will you be there to watch?

If you are still peripatetic I can put you up at Goolwa on the weekend.

Have been in Canberra for a few days with very poor internet connection.

On my way back to Sydney so along the highway I can communicate again.

Only the most marginal of boating activities - went for a sail with a friend on Lake Burley Griffin in very light winds. Did see one of the 18ft Norwalk Island Sharpies with the ketch rig I drew up being motored - but they were going into a lull area in a very patchy day - so couldn't follow because we would have been becalmed.

The boat was a plastic Topper. It dealt Ok with two smallish adults on board if we kept weight central.

The rest of the time it was galleries and museums - I used to live there when I started to be a boat designer full time (the first time) so was very nice to catch up with culture.

I love Rules of Thumb, so will check it out.

Does the GIS ride on a bubble of air?

It occurred to me last Saturday that, on occasions, the Goat rides on bubbles of trapped air. We had pretty flat water on the lake and as we moved along the gurgling noise under the hull was pretty loud. It’s quite amusing as it could be heard by other nearby boats. When the conditions are just right, such as in a light breeze and small ripples on the surface, the air is trapped between the runners and creates a musical gurgling sound as these bubbles make their way aft and exit at the transom.

Yet another performance trick that reduces wetted surface area!

I am going up on the Saturday with AlexN who is building the OzRacer. We will be meeting up with Bruce (Woodeneye) who with any luck will have his "for sale" Goat Island Skiff there.

Won't be around on the Sunday.

You can look for the varnished Goat Island Skiff or speak to the Chaps on the NSW Boatcraft Pacific stand - they are otherwise called "Drive Marine".

STill in the USA but back on board.

Just needed a bit of a break. It's been almost five years since the rebirth of storerboats. I can't imagine the number of email and posts I've answered and the number of net articles.

I think I was a bit burned out.

Am currently staying at Duckworks in Texas. And will be doing a talk for the Central Texas boat crafters and messabout society in a couple of weeks.

Then will have time to head up and get some canoe coaching from Paul Helbert.

See you all more regularly on this forum.
