Hello,
Help please I have been given a Stanley 55 plane in pristine condition complete in original box and would like to know it's value.
Thanks

Patrick Leach has a 'thing' against combination planes, so I'm not sure that it's wise to make a value decision based on his view...

Hans Brunner (http://www.hansbrunnertools.gil.com.au/Stanley%20by%20numbers/Stanley%2055.htm) says $350-500 if complete and depending on condition. But ISTR some going for higher prices on ePay.

But the best thing to do is to come the whole way onto the dark side and work out how to use these things - Jake Darvall's posts on this Forum (his user name is apricotripper) tells you most of what you need to know.

You can probably sell the box for $100. :D

True!

thanks guys.... but I have no intentions on learning how to use one. Thought of using it for decorative purposes on display ..... but starting to think that would be a waste if there are people out there who actually still use them, or collect them.

There are still people who use a steel and flint, too. :U

Properly cleaned up, it'd still make a nice decorative piece and won't lose any value...

A really nice 55 plane that has seen little use and exhibits just typical shelf wear from sitting idle for so long, original box. I saw this touted as a bonus on eBay a couple years ago, and that example then soared to a world record price for a 55, something like 2 grand, and it had so much tape on it you could hardly see the box. I guess that is what makes auctions exciting, anyway, here is your chance to get one just as nice for a lot less.

wow..... lol I asked this question in Dec 07! lol
But even more astounding... we still have that Stanley...... we didn't get any offers that were acceptable, so it's just sitting here.... taking up space....

Keju,
A 55 in really good cond. complete and with a full set of cutters in original box quite often sell for $400 to $500. The Tool Exchange http://www.toolexchange.com.au/stanleypartsandplaneparts2.htm has a set of SW era boxed cutters (4 boxes} for a 55 that were listed at $400 (cutters only)

Where did you get the name "Keju" from?

JuvyAll I can say is that you're asking too much

I have the Record equivalent so don't need a #55, but I'm told a fair price for a complete #55 is about AUD$250 (tool dealers will sell for more and try to buy for less)

hmmmm.... Ian.. how can I be asking too much if I haven't even listed the price anywhere.. it was just word of mouth so far. The offers we got so far was under $100 and we didn't take that serious.
To be honest... I forgot all about it until there were new answers posted here.

Patonga.... keju is simply the combination of the first two letters of my husband's and my first names - I know.. did't show a lot of imagination :)

Juvy ( ok... this one.... combination of first two letters of my first and last name lol)

Ian,
Record never copied the 55.
The one they copied was the 45.
Called it the 405.
As in o3,o4, o5 etc.
The 55 is a lot more complex plane with over twice the number of blades.
There are various sites out there to check out what things are, Hans even has info on Stanley now besides the origonal "blood and gore".
If you are into Record check out http://www.recordhandplanes.com/

I paid $250 for a complete 55 with all the cutters in he yellow box , it was in great condition and I got it because my father had talked about how he would have loved one bet could never afford one , so it was a sentermental buy for me . I have , after several hours , made several mouldings that are indivdual and just a joy to make , thing is I have plenty of time :2tsup:

Do you still have the plane? If so, what are the markings on the skate. I am wondering if it was made in the US or Canada. Some of the Sweetheart and later models were marked as being made in Canada. They are pretty scarce.

Bob,
Yes I still have the plane but plan to sell it when I return home. I am away up north at present to get away from the winter. No pun intended. From memory I'm not sure where it was made but have an idea it was the U.S.A.

Stanley made their tools in Quebec to get around the Empire trading sceme.
Mother England set this up to monopolise trade with the colonies.
Planes marked made in Canada might be uncommon in Canada but you see plenty of them over a few years here in Oz.
I guess Starrett set up in Scotland for the same reasons.
The cheap labor angle also came into it I'm sure.

Roxton Pond, Quebec to be exact. Dave Heckel said in his book it was because of Canadian nationalism that some of the 45"s were marked Made in Canada. I informed him of the real reason some time ago but I don't think he has issued a new edition of the book and I doubt he is apt to.

He also says the actual Canadian planes were made in the USA and merely marked otherwise. I would expect that there was more going on than that.

It's just stored there, it actually fits on the blade guide on the other side of the plane

So what exactly does one do with a blade guide? Isn't the sliding section more or less the blade guide?

And thanks! That screw has been bugging me for a while,
As though I was not getting the full usefulness of my plane because I didn't incorporate this hidden function. 😅

It's mainly for giving a bit of support to the wider blades, clamping them to the main part it was only available on the 55s for a short period

There was four or five Stanley 55's for sale at the HTPAA tool sale last weekend at St Andrews hall Carnegie. Sticker price went from $255 to $500ish (before negotiations) depending on condition, box etc etc. Great sale by the way. Terrific new venue with plenty of room. Heaps turned up.
