Hi all :U:U:U:U:U:U:U

My first big project!!!! Coffee table.
It's kind of a continue from http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=60429

I have been to Mathews timber and bought all I need from there and got a discount!!!!:U:U:U

My parent insisted that I let them season the timber there... cost $50... and only turned out ok, some boards were bent and the edges are also a bit bent but LGS kindly offered to help me re-plane the timber and join them

Looking good Mr 235. Don't forget to let us know what timber you actually ended up getting, and perhaps post a few more WIPs as you go. Are you doing it all by hand? Who is LGS?

How old's your mum, by the way? Does she have any tools? Maybe a boat?

Regards. Wayne

haosiliu235,

Looking good. What timber did you end up selecting, looks like hardwood.

I'm going to be building two coffee tables in the new year, so keep up with the photos, I hope to learn something from your work.

:U:U:UHi All

The timber i am using is Karri for the table top and sides, tassie oak for the draw front and jarrah for rail and legs.

Been to Rob's (LGS) place, he helped me join the table top, he is so kind. Rob also showed me around his place, which is full of furniture he made...:o:o:U:U those furniture are so beautiful. Sorry but forgot to take camera to Rob's shed so no pictures on joining the table top.
currently doing the legs and rail so probably post some more pic tonight:U:U

Cheers

Hi all,
Just wanted to say that HS did all the work today after a quick lesson on using the tools required. His desire to achieve nothing but the best is truly encouraging. It's a pleasure to see someone so keen and with such high standards. This table will be a beauty.

Regards,

Rob

There is how I cut the tenons on the rails. Basically it's a sled with a tenon jig:U:U:U. I set the Table saw blade to desired height and cut the tenons

Here is the tenon done, but edge is a bit rough so i cleaned by passing it (crosscutting) on the Table saw set to the right height.:U:U

I like your set up HS.

That is a serious tenoning jig.

You table top looks nice and flat. You are going to end up with a great table.

Merry christmas :U:U
Happy new year:U:U

so I cut the top bit on the tennons

haosiliu235
1st January 2008, 11:50 PM
Now for the legs

I marked out the bit to cut, drill to the correct depth, and clean up with a chisel:U:U

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:25 AM
Now I do the dovetails for the sides of the draws:U
I marked the dovetails and cut them :U:U

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:28 AM
After cutting I chipped the waste out with chisel

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:31 AM
so here are the tails all cut

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:34 AM
Now for the pins:U:U

I line the tails up to the top and mark the tails on the pin board.... and cut it... hard to explain.... :U:U pic will be better

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:35 AM
By the way... after leaving the table top in my garage it started to bend and some are starting the crack...:C:C:C what would be a good way of fixing the cracks?

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:37 AM
all the tails cut

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:40 AM
after cutting out the pins ... I chisel them out....:U:U:U.... but as it took too long i decided to buy a triton router that i got from my work:U:U:U
and it made cleaning the pins much easier and faster:U

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 12:42 AM
after the :U:U:UTRITON :U:U:U I clean the pins with chisel

haosiliu235

haosiliu235

Still looking good!:p:p did you solve the cracking problem? I was going to suggest CA.
Trouble with Eucalypts, they are very fissile.

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 10:22 AM
Now for the dado......made a lot of mistakes while doing this:C:C.... all mistakes happened while on the router...

First the router didn't follow the fence... second I accidentally router all the way through.. third... I forgot the set the depth so I router through the top...:C:C

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 10:26 AM
I then made stop blocks for the draws.... because the draws run from both sides of the coffee table and i don't want to put a piece of board between them.

haosiliu235
2nd January 2008, 10:29 AM
Still haven't decided on a finish for my coffee table... and also i have to figure out a way of making the legs darker then the top and the draw front. and also tapering the legs.:U:U

BTW when I picked up the tops from Rob he gave me some red cedar :U:U!!
so Nice!!!!:U:U:U

Several things you should have learnt here:

Check twice, cut once...Depth:D
Take firm hold of router and push firmly against fence:p
Use stop blocks so you don't go all the way through:doh:
Try doing dados in several passes. Will help eliminate some of your problemms and is a good way to tackle hardwood.Keep on keeping on!:B:B

Really good to highlight the lessons. I often come in from the shed after a day of disaster, and my wife asks "how was it today" My positive response is "I learned a lot" But I still keep on making the same mistakes :oo:. However, I do seem to be getting a bit better and I suppose I am learning.

"Write it off to experience" is one of my most favoured expressions.

Coffee table progress looks great by the way, and I am stimulated by your tenon cutter on the cross-cut sled.

I did the draws yesterday, only on one side because I left some wood in Rob's place.

I had work today so no woodwork... but just want to ask about loose tenons, a few legs had very loose tenons, it's caused by measurement error... but just want to ask about fixing this problem.

cheers

Glue a piece of wood to the tenon and plane it to its correct size.

haosiliu235
6th January 2008, 12:10 AM
I am nearly up to gluing:U:U will post more pics soon:U.
Want to ask about a finish that doesn't darken the wood, I tried wax but still had darkening effect but really like the finish of wax.... looking for a similar result but not darkening it..:U:U

BTW I did 102 number of dovetails on the table:U:U:U... that's why the table is taking so long.
