:U Sorry couldnt resist that :;

So anyways I was thinking... can I stretch your brain packet a tad?

Okay like old Bolger Ive noticed that you seem to have a bit of a penchant for boxes... well nice looking boxes... but well... lets try something eh?

Im as I said on the other thread looking for a boat for the rivers for my sis and her life partner... but I want something with a bit of pizzaz style you know?

So Im thinking of a fantail... or like the old luggar bums of yore rounded you know instead of the squre transomes something pretty?... okay and the stem nice and gawd me minds gone bluuuuuuuuurrk!! cant remember the flamin name for the stem Im thinking of!!... you know blunt?? damn!!... okay lets think here not like fame where its long and slinky with great overhangs but rather like David Paynes Cinema? that sorta stem... okay so your okay with the sides lookin like the old Halverson style and thats cool but Im thinking more Africa Queen style you know? more Iain Ougtred style where the ply becomes strakes?... and so not so high sided... wider too and with the canopy

Gails thoughts are for her and Vicky to just plod along up the rivers drop some crab nets overboard a fishin rod or two and a nice tipple of a fine red at the end of the day as the sun sets... that sorta thing... but they like their room... rather ahem shall we say well endowed women these two! :roll: they also entertain a fair bit so lets look at getting say 6 - 8 for an evenings jaunt upriver and back... not all the time of course but for a picnic jaunt say once a month most times it would just be the two girls... ahem and me!! I will stow away if I have to!! :q

So it will need to be able to easily carry some weight! (strewth I hope she never reads this!!! I'll be dead if she does!! :C ) say have bench seats all along the sides with a small table running halfway along the centre a couple of seats in the front area as in your pics of the river boat where the chaps at the controls... so they can sit up front and just wander along or anchor somewhere quiet and with friends (me) watch the sunset while drinkin a few cold wines an feasting on fresh crabs and fish

Oh and mate? hide the ruddy outboard for me will you? cant abide looking at the things... If its gotta have a motor hide it!!... sheesh these two sheilas just cant get it through their heads that I LIKE RAGBAGGERS!! :doh:

But shes sorta looking for something that stands out you know? fantail sterns are drop dead gorgeous in my book Im building the thing I want some of my tastes in it by gar!!

Now I wonder if you can wangle an hour here a few minutes there a second or two here and there and whack me up something like that?... I just KNOW yer love a challenge old son :2tsup:

Go on mate :whistling1: ...I'll gladly shout yer a cartoon of your fav booze :beer: Its a deal? cheers!! :cheers2: :shakehands:

or should I just say buggarbumbastard or words to that effect and buy the plans from woodenboats store... USD of course more expensive of course not Aussie of course... tryin to rub your national pride here Mik ol mate!! :q

Howdy Dingo,

Thanks for all the flattery - I'll change it all to flashing text later.

To design a new boat takes a lot of time. Most people turn up at the toes if they know how much they are up for a custom design.

Some big name designers doing flash boats (I'm not interested - it all looks rather boring (they're all the same and nobody dares to do things much differently) can get that type of money.

A zzzz from Judel Vrolijk

But for me it is best if I can spread the cost amongst a whole lot of owners - so they only have to fork out $100 at a time (or $20 for a PDRacer). I have to sell dozens of plans to cover the cost of developing them.

So ... the boat as you describe .. the 23ft riverboat is as close as I've got - and it ain't worth doing something that is so close to the same function. Maybe Bolger, Gartside might have something like what you describe. Reueueueuel Parker. Devlin has done some bigger boats with pretty sterns - but I'm not sure if he has any smaller ones.

Also to really pick bones ... do you mean a counter stern or one of those round backed things (vertically staved like some trad sharpies?) or something else. It is pretty hard to make an outboard coexist with anything elegant - you have to cover the problem of it tilting and a hole for the wash to come out of at the back. Not to mention the problem the wide stern you need on a short boat because there is no way of stopping the crowd from gathering at the back of the boat.

This might sound a bit negative - but maybe there is something, somewhere.

Sorry for OT :;

Tell to the truth: from Bolger influences aren't secret!:)
At Building Manual of Beth (a sharpie canoe yawl) Michael wrote:

Robho,

Don't worry.

Most of us find it easier to understand your English than Wild Dingo's!

I have always suspected that most of what Ding says is in Polish, but perhaps you may not agree!

Cheers,

Howdy Robert,

I did find a Polish Translator, but it didn't work.

Some of the names for "Australian English" are "Ocker" or "Strine".

I did find a Ocker online translator and put one of Dingoes posts in. It took about 4 minutes to translate ...

And I couldn't see any changes!!!!

This is what I put in from the mighty doggie:

Gails thoughts are for her and Vicky to just plod along up the rivers drop some crab nets overboard a fishin rod or two and a nice tipple of a fine red at the end of the day as the sun sets... that sorta thing... but they like their room... rather ahem shall we say well endowed women these two!

And this is what I got back

Gails thoughts are for her `n` Vicky ta just plod along up the rivers drop some crab nets overboard a fishin rod or two `n` a nice tipple of a fine red at the end of the day as the sun sets... that sorta thing... but they like their room... rather ahem shall we say well endowed women these two!

Try it yourself

Michael and bitingmidge and Wild Dingo of course!

Thanks for reply - The answer is simple: my English is poor indeed and Australian English is really beautiful :):):)

Sorry for OT discussion!
.......

I have great Phil Bolger's book "Boats With an Open Mind" and Harold "Dynamite" Payson's "...Instant Boats" where are shown many Bolgers designs of boats. I can see than few of Bolger boats could be most inspiration for Michael and other small boats designers. Most of those designs are unconventional but with "visualised" provenience from tradition, simple and easy to build and they have "character" - like Michael's boats (Beth - my favorite and GIS) :)
IMHO Michael's boats are more elegant but PDR is unconventional as most unonventional Bolger's boats :):):)

(is my English ok?)

Yes, you're English is very good indeed.

The PDR is actually not one of Michael's original designs. It was designed by Shorty Routh in the US, based on Bolger's Brick, and some of them have been so ugly only their mother's would love them!

Michael actually made them elegant in their own simple way, by refining the construction detailing and the shape of the cockpit and the curve in the sheer. So I'd give him a lot of credit for turning an ugly duckling into a not quite so ugly duckling! In fact, there's a lot about them that's very clever indeed.

Cheers,

P

Probably you are right. PDR is very similar to Brick (in general foundations) but (IMHO) is different in many solutions originally designed by Michael. It's a "Brick idea developed to PDR" :;:;:;
