I'd be interested in that - I have a 1958 Super Seven. As soon as I work out how to reduce file size on this Crapple computer I'll post a photo or two (iPhoto REALLY sucks)

not the missus then?

Definitely not , Missus is barred from my shed .
She has to fill in an application form and present it one month in advance to even get a look in there. :fineprint:

this is mine after restoration - doesn't look quite this good now

what's really great about this lathe is that I found out it's manufacture date was within 3 months of my own date of birth - how cool is that!!

Looks very neat .
Wish I had the cabinet with mine ,unfortunately it wasn't with it when I bought it at auction.
Mine is just sitting on one of my steel work benches ,not even bolted down at this stage.
I use it just for small stuff at the moment .
Have some material to make mounting blocks etc.
The pics above are from after the day I got it ,it looks a lot cleaner now.

Hi Sleeping Dog,
You have made a nice job of your restoration.
You may experience some problems with vibration using RHS as raising
blocks and possibly some bed distortion. It probably negates some of the rigidity you have in the cabinet.
The factory units are from CI which in itself is a "dead" material ie not
resilient - no flex to transmit vibration. Also the blocks incorporate
jacking screws (thru which the holding down bolts pass) these are used to level the machine and adjust for any distortion when bolting down. If you you bolt the machine down using a
dial gauge (as you should) to check for twisting etc., you will be amazed how easy it is to distort the bed by simply putting a bit more turn on one mounting bolt!
The factory raising blocks allow you to adjust each bolt individually to cancel out any distortion.
I own a Super 7 Long Bed which I have had since new for about 25 years
If treated properly they are one of the best small lathes avail.
My company used to be NZ agent for Myford and we sold quite a number
of lathes and accessories here.
Parts are avail ex the factory and they are a great company to deal with.

Thanks Pomare,

Restoration might be a bit of a strong word here, I didn't undertake any mechanical work on it, there is a bit of wear on the work end of the bed but I'm willing to put up with that, other than that it was in pretty good nick. Basically all I did was strip, paint and polish.

The raising blocks were missing when I bought the lathe, I think the cabinet and the machine came from different places, the RHS was always just a stopgap until I could get the proper gear but after 3 years they're still there. I haven't had any problems with vibration to date but then it doesn't get a lot of work.

When I get more playtime I'll get the bed and cross reground and fix her up proper.

Raising blocks are on Ebay ,but from UK , price is not too bad ,but postage is a killer from there .
Went to buy a 5" Myford threaded backing plate from Ebay UK for around $30.00AUD , postage was $78.00 AUD so I decided not to bid.
I will just get a backing plate from Minitech for $66.00AUD
Minitech in Brisbane are the Myford agents and have some parts in stock ,not sure about the raising blocks .
I plan to make my own from 1" steel plate ,found some drawings on a website for them but Im struggling to find it again. When I do Ill post the link.

Had a look at at that site Kev, but I couldn't get anywhere with it, kept taking me to dead ends. Perhaps the site is no longer maintained.

I've been to Minitec, bought my milling machine from them, they have a good range of tools and equipment there.
When I was there they had a brand new Myford, top of the range, if I remember correctly the price was about $15,000:o:o pretty much the same as my oldie but with a gearbox hanging off the front and a few new bits and bobs on it and a different colour. I paid $3,000 for mine:U happy?, you betcha...

Thanks Prozac, I appreciate that, I think I won't be chasing it up at this stage (just spent a motza at the wood show:2tsup:). The way it's set up now may not be ideal but it's given me no trouble, as far as I know it's not doing the machine any harm either...

Cheers,
Peter.

Myford manufactured quite a few models of lathes over the years ,and each model had different features introduced over the life of production.
Model type , serial number and what accessories and some pics would make life easier.
Genuine Myford accessories also command high prices.
Is it a ML7 or Super 7 , metric or imperial ? , screw cutting gearbox fitted? Power feed cross slide? etc.

Clear pictures would help

More info can be found here on Myfords
http://www.lathes.co.uk/
and here http://www.minitech.com.au/
and here Myford home site UK http://www.myford.com/pricelist/accessories.htm

Hard to determine its worth with out more info.
If you browse the Myford UK site they have a second hand machinery sale board which may help in prices , you will need to convert to AUD though.
Even if I bought a larger lathe I would still keep my Myford .

Thanks Ray I did find that link previously.
The guy who owns the original webpage (Chris Heapy ) has sort of dis-appeared ,dont know what happened ,I heard it became too costly ,fortunately some one copied his website and uploaded to another server .The site remains un-maintained ,which is unfortunate as it is a brilliant resource.
If I could do 1/2 of what Chris has done ,making all of his own tools and stuff I would be happy .
