I've never had a go at texturing, watched DJ demo a tool at Ern's turnfest and was impressed, but not sure the $'s were merited. Decided to try & knock one up. Found an old sprocket, ground it down, bushed it and fitted into a handle (a rubber roller from a photocopier). Tested it out on some red ironbark and this was the result. I was stoked, black finish is nugget, 2 coats of EEE and 2 coats of Glow.

Way to go! :2tsup:

If you hold it so it runs at an angle, you'll probably find it'll makes spirals (of a sort) too. :)

Nugget, eh? Hmmm...

Very nice effect. Especially the random pattern. I reckon Sorby's was DIY at one point or another too.

Good one Allan.
I have been thinking of making one for a while and been on the lookout for the right bits to come along. I even considered the wheel dresser with some of the star wheels removed but as I still need it for the grinder it has escaped for the moment.

Andy due to minor (major) design/engineering the device doesnot exactly run true on an angle(it snags) mark 2 might be a bit better

Ted it is 5cm diameter, had to bush the centre & redrill, a bit sloppy seizes up when trying to work on an angle. Hopefully next time better, but happy with the result

Looks great Allan. What's Nugget and how do you apply it to only fill the holes. I'm assuming that's where it is? :B

HH nugget is shoe polish (the tinned variety) and I just wiped it on with a rag and removed the excess

While it's spinning? do you apply before or after the other finish?

HH.

HH apply the nugget with a rag, turn piece by hand and rub off any excess, start lathe and polish then apply EEE

Great work Allan!

I have always said that blokes from Pascoe Vale
are creative. Absolutely great result and cant
wait to see you in action with better "gear".

I should add - the bowl looked great too even
before the texturing.

I recently had a small box of woodworking bits given
to me and I found these inside.

What are they?

* Could they be tools for a pastrycook to crimp
the edges of pies, or

* Tools used by dressmakers, machinists etc, or

* For use in woodwork similar to Allan's implement.

Any ideas please.

My guess is that they're for marking a pattern onto fabric or leather.

I have a small brass wheel similar to those, it is used to mark leather when doing saddle stitching, to get the stitches evenly spaced as Ern Said

I think they are leatherwork tools.
