how point less is having a 5 micron fillter on a dust collector, to be used for general collection with soild timber.

Something like 99% of the volume of sawdust is bigger than 5 microns which is good because a 5 micron filter will therefore collect 99% of the volume. . . .
BUT
~ 30% of the total number of particles are smaller than 5 microns. These are the ones that cause health problems.

Thus, while the 5 microns filter seems to do a good job because it collects most of the dust it's largely cosmetic because it doesn't protect your health although I guess it reduces fire risk?

Because some solid timbers contain toxic chemicals!
