Greetings to all members from a newbie to the forum,
I have to work in a seriously confined workshop (9x12 ft) and constantly strive to find ways to optimise space and operations, whilst keeping both sanity and safety in perspective, so my latest project might help similarly space challenged members or even those more endowed with BIg shops.
This is a dual purpose slot morticer/router table which has been adapted
to conserve on space whilst being available for both the intended functions. I bought the base slot morticer off Ebay for a song and whilst it does its intended function admirably, space constrictions meant that I needed a router table as well. The unit is an attachment from a Kity combination machine which the previous owner modified to work as a stand-alone item. As seen from the photos, I have adapted this to work in both the normal slot morticer setup, i.e in the vertical mode, and as a normal router table, by "borrowing" the flip saw concept adopted by some of the big names in table saws. Nothing fancy, just 3/4" pipe bolted to the large alu backplate, pivoted on simple wood bearings allow the whole unit to swing from vertical to horizontal in seconds and be bolted down. The micro adjustable table works as the back fence and the backplate become the table. Bit change and adjustment is easy in both modes and the system works so well that I have used it for moldings, dados, rebates and of course, mortice and tenons. Don't think I will be doing any panel raising on though!
