Hi All
Is there a way to reduce a photo from 1.3mb to the size needed for posting in the forums.
Any help would be much appreciated.:?

Hi, yes you can reduce the picture but you need a photo resizing program. If you are running Windows XP, you can download the free shell extension called Image resizer from Microsoft. It's one of the power toys for Windows XP.
go HERE (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx) and scroll down the page until you see the "Image resizer" and download it and install. This is a shell extension and all you need to do to resize your picture is "right click" on the picture you want to resize and then click on the option in the drop down box "Resize Picture"

The picture will only reduce to a certain size and if it doesn't reduce enough to post on the forum, open the picture in a photo editing program such as IrfanView (free to download) and then re save the picture under another name and then "resize" the picture again until it is small enough for what you need.

If you don't have XP then you can download one of the free photo resizers available on the net.

Hi LRP this has been asked many times in the forum

I use http://www.irfanview.com/ but always save the photo as jpg at 1/2 the rate and save to different folder keep the original.

Almost any photo software these days will allow you to change the size look for resize in your tools but always save it as a new file elsewhere.

Here are the links to the programs I spoke of above. IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/) and here is the one for a free standing photo resizer if you are not using XP it's called
Fast Stone Photo resizer (http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm) Both of these programs are free.

I use irfanview for all my re-sizing and quick viewing needs. (I use Corel PhotoPaint for more intense action)

Here's a tip. To resize a lot of photos in a folder at once, for example the ones you download from a camera, follow these steps:

open a photo by double clicking on it.
hit B on your keyboard
select the photos in the right pane and click the add button.
Click the "use this directory as output" button
In the little "Output director" window below, add in "low res" at the end of the path.
Click the "Set Advanced Options" button and choose whatever results you want. This is especially helpful if you want to rotate a whole lot of photos at once. Other settings include new sizes and contrast brightness etc.
Now hit the start button. What is does is takes the photos you specified, adjusts them how you told it to in the advanced options, and saves them in a new directory you specified in step 5.

For a single photo hit Ctrl+R and follow the prompts.

More tips with Irfanview:

Use:

the mouse wheel to scroll from one photo to the next.
L or R to rotate the photo
F to toggle between actual size and to fit the window. (Great if you can't see the whole photo at once)
T to to see thumbnails of the current folder

This free on-line image adjustment tool was cited on a post a couple weeks ago:

Works great, and you can save any or all of several results.

The simplest I've found is to take your pics at a suitable resolution. Look in your camera's manual for something like "resolution" which should indicate file sizes. Larger file sizes are suited for archiving and printing. Higher-end cameras may not have a small enough file size, however.
