The brake on my husky 455 has actuated.

I can't push the spring back by hand.
Do you need a special spring compressor to reset it?

Do you mean the chain brake Bob? Should be able to just pull the chain brake lever back towards you, it will be stiff but you'll feel it once it clicks back over

That's what I thought.
I ended up taking the cover off and the brake is held by a springloaded cam which I can't reset.
I hope I'm doing something stupid and its not a design feature,
It is an impossible task to reset in the bush.

Something certainly sounds wrong there, maybe get a dealer to check it out for you.

Maybe the cam has worn down and it's over tensioning

I got the solution from the arboriste site.

Thanks Ole Farmerbuck
I did that, it worked brilliantly.
Unfortunaley I didn't hold the spring down and it went twang and flew off into the shed. Oh well I'll just have to get a new spring
