Balloon Clocks

Here is a Balloon clock made from two pieces of solid Jarrah or painted using a soft wood or even MDF. The whole process was completed with the router in the plunge mode to ensure safety with the router. (This one was produced by one of my group when we met on a Sat Morning) I supplied all the jigs and templates and Frank completed the project.
This does require some knowledge of the use of the template guides, Also developed a new method of applying the external mouldings using the router without having to insert it in the router table.

Just a sample on the use of the template guides the material has to be selected to match. Frank was one of a group of woodworkers who used to meet on a Sat to discuss projects and on a few days they actually made something. Initially it was an interest to see what is capable with the router in the plunge mode an exercise in fact.
I never had the chance to introduce this project to the Association for the blind but yes I am convinced this could be achieved by a blind person under supervision of course once the jigs and templates were produced. And yes they could be totally blind. Ron one of my 'Students' would have no problem producing this project. Ron is totally blind but he took to routing better than a number of people who have full vision.
I enjoyed my time with a great bunch of people who were willing to learn how to use the router and they put their trust in me to guide them.

Here is a another balloon clock that a friend of mine completed using the same method of construction. Then he added a top to it and I am sure anyone would be pleased to produce such a fine article. Harry has gone on to make a number of clocks and some were made much larger than the original. I think he used the linisher to create the top section, but there was a lot of guidance required to prepare the top to take the addition. He was going to cut it out using the radial arm saw until I pointed out to him he did not have a straight side to go against the fence.
How will I do it he said! with the router of course was my reply. You will also notice that he has run a small beading moulding round the edge. This required some thought as to how this could be achieved. It was all very interesting producing the jigs and templates which without them the clock could not be done????? I am sure there are people out there who might say 'Rubbish To you can do it this way'. I am always interested in new ideas and new techniques.
