I bit the bullet today and drove down to Carbatec to by a D1600. I was surprised to be told that they were no longer available but very happy to be able to get the new super jig in 18 inch length for $60 cheaper than the D1600. I am a happy man, bigger jig for less $:2tsup:.

I bet you are. I bought one, a super 12 just before christmas from carbetec in brisbane and later on found that the prices they had marked on the 18 and 24 were wrong. The 18 from memory was only about 60 dollars more than the 12. I would have went for the 18. Anyway I still need to assemble it and try it out. Too many other things happening......

Thanks for that CP. I am awaiting my DVD from Leigh as they have a production problem and it has to be sent out. I have watched the online DVD's and read the manual and reckon I should be right to do some basic boxes and finish my wall cabinet for my tools. Ran around yesterday trying to find a 8mm collet for my 3260 and thought I had a win at Glenfords but when I got it home I found it was 3/8  so will have to go back tomorrow and order a 8mm one.

The good thing is that not being able to use it has meant I have not spent the weekend playing with it but reorganised the whole shed again:oo:. My car is now out of the shed and is going on the market (first child on the way :2tsup: so need to pay for air condtioning before next summer) so I have a whole lot more space. I am really happy with how it has turned out now (this is the third complete shift around and I think I am finally getting to a point where I am maximising my space). Planning a drive south next weekend to pick up Dad's orange jointer/thicknesser as I don't have one and he is on permanent holidays around Aust at the moment so it is available for me to borrow:D.

What is a woodrat collet, is it a generic collet that will fit the Makita, if so and if it's cheap I might grab one? Working in North Beach this week so will drop by tomorrow afternoon and see what they have.

Glenfords have already ordered a Makita one and I have already paid the $8 for it so otherwise I will just wait.

$8 for a collet, sure that is not a reducer? The last collet I bought was thirty US.

It is a standarded 12.7 to 8mm reducer which is a bit longer than the makita one but it is dearer, approx $20. more slots to give better holding. they came standard with the woodrat but i did see a couple in carbatec some time ago, worth a check as they did hold better and were better made.

trend make an 8mm collett for a Makita which is a much better option than a reducer.

I am talking about a collet cone, Makita make 4 different sizes for the 3260. It is not a reducer but a different sized cone to hold the 8mm bit directly, that is why it is only $8.

Thanks Burnsy, good option. There is a thread somewhere, ah here http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=57890&highlight=leigh+jig+problem about makitas and reducers with the Leigh Jig.

Hey Burnsey,

Next weekend I'll be off to Carbatec to buy a leigh Jig.
Carbatec are still advertising the D1600.
After using the Super jig do you have any regrets?
At this stage I'm leaning towards the Super 18, but the D1600 has a pretty good reputation. I haven't read much on the Superjigs.

What are the differences between the D1600 and the Super 18 ??

What accessories did you get with the jig??

Cheers

The D1600 and D4 are one piece extrusions and have precision milled surfaces at 90 degrees. The superjigs are plain 2 part extrusions (no milling).

The D1600 is higher quality but has a slightly smaller capacity,

has the D1600 been taken out of pruduction? if so what your thoughs on the super jig and what size would be best

The D1600 is still in production see

www.leighjigs.com

The question is Does anyone sell them in Aus? Carbatec don't seem to stock them and MIK is closed down. Timbecon still have them on their website but still at the old high price $499. You should be able to get one in the low $400's

Which superjig to buy?? Depends on your budget. The bigger the more versatile. If money is no object get the D4R clearly the best available.

sorry for the same type of quesions. would the D4R be a better buy than the D1600

The D4R has 2 main differences to the D1600.
1. Width (which is also a reason for larger angles when constructing angled dovetails).
2. Variable pin sizing due to the nature of the split fingers.
Furthermore same quality construction and accuracy.
I believe that carba-tec is selling the D1600 + VRS for $299 at the moment as a runout special. The D1600 is still in production tho. It is just that the price will not compete with the new Leigh superjigs (which seem to me not the same quality). See the Leigh jig comparison chart on their website for the specs.

If you have the money and the need of the extra features of the D4R then go for it but I would have to say that $299 for the D1600 with VRS would have to be the bargain of the decade. I paid well over $500 for this combination.

lesmeyer

I also need to add that with the D4R one can also use thicker timber - 31mm thick for thru dovetails and 37mm for blind dovetails (this being the pin board).
The thicker timber dovetails make use of larger cutters (1/2" shank) and thus the split fingers come into play.
Hope this all helps.

I've got the D4R for a couple of reasons, different pin widths, larger/thicker dovetails and it's extra width (which makes it ideal for blanket boxes etc).

It's costs more but you will never find yourself thinking - if only I had the larger jig when that project comes along that is a little too large for the D1600.

Ciao,

M.

Could'nt agree more, also handy with the variety of templates that gives more options...

Using the router bits I reckon on using the I/2" shaft ones for rigidity as often
as possible and have a set of CMT as well as the Leigh provided ones.

Cheers:)

To the best of my knowledge, NO.
You need to use the F2 template.
