Loose tenons?

With all the latest intrist in the Festool Domino (cool tool but pricey) has anybody tried the Mortise Pal jig? http://mortisepal.com/index.html (http://mortisepal.com/index.html) Just wondering if anybody has and what your thoughts were on it. It looks like it might work good for chair making and such. (I am not affiliated with this company in any way just looked interesting)

Well I thought it was alright. It is just another jig. It will great for some. It all depends on what you do and how often you use it. It is no better than the home-made router jig I have at the moment.

I will get the Domino when I have the momey.

They also will only ship UPS ground, so they are not interested in orders outside Nth America either.

Nice enough idea & execution, but for roughly US$200 you can make quite a few of Rocker's mortise jigs, or make your own copies of this one.

I had a good look at their videos here (http://mortisepal.com/videos.html)

Its a good economical alternative to a domino,

Cons, limited to 2" thick stock. no shipping to Oz.

So it looks like I might have to make a jig for myself.
that can handle wide stock or use against a wide face
Some Blackwood and Brass or Chrome sounds the go.

Add that to me list of things ter make

I agree with you Bob, about making something similar myself.

Out of interest, if you wanted to do loose tenon joinery the Beadlock (http://www.beadlock.com/) system is similar with the advantage that you just use a drill not a router. I'm not a huge fan of the noise from routers so would prefer this system. Also it is available in OZ and price wise I think would end up being the same, including having to buy the suitable router bits.

Not interested in the beadlock as you hafta buy the tenons,
whereas it is simple to do a run of offcuts into normal tenon stock
Wear earmuffs for noise

You can buy router bits to make the tenon stock yourself.

I do wear earmuffs for noise, but after working around industrial shapers and routers for 10 year, I have become sensitive to the pitch that they make. Just a personal preference thing I suppose.

You can also buy beadlock router bits that allow you to profile your stock to suit the Beadlock system. Initially not cheap, but anyone with a router and table can make suitable loose tenons from any suitable timber, avoiding the cost of buying the beadlock material.

Sorry, repeating Butcher's post but it does have a link for the bit info. Mal

its a lot quicker to run loose tenons through a thicknesser

But if you are using a router or drill to make the mortice you still have to pass it over a router table to round over the edges!?

Point is that beadlock is another option, and with the router bit you can make your tenons from whatever wood you like - no need to buy stock.
