I have completed three upholstery projects using a beginners' guide to upholstery book. I would like to learn more by attending a course. Any suggestions for a good practical immediate/advanced course in Sydney?

Thanks

Nicole

Hi Nicole,
How did you end up looking for an uphostery course last year?
I am ticking over putting together a course that would be delivered online ...... not a face to face situation, however, I'm thinking it could be very useful for many types of upholstery. Use of video, powerpoint etc to give a 'realistic one on one' presentation.
I'd appreciate your response!
Cheers,
John

I would be interested in looking at an online course. I am a real beginner and have started some projects for a social club, just basic sewing. But now I am finding I have to draw, cut and sew large circles ( 3 metre diameter ) - for which I have no idea where to start. And, I would also like to know how to go about cutting rounded corners on my material as square corners look horrible. If a course covers such things I would be interested.
Thanks

This is an old thread. My wife did an upholstery course in Sydney quite a few years ago at TAFE. I would give them a ring and see if they have any courses coming up in the near future.

This is an old thread so probably not useful to Nicole anymore. There is a really good upholstery course run through Macquarie Community College which is held at a school in Carlingford. I've done several sessions through there and the teachers (there have been 2 but one has now retired) were both great.

Hi, I've taken several upholstery classes at the local skills center. I just checked out this video and it is very good - almost better than my classes.

Go here: YouTube - Upholstery Class: How to Upholster a Dining Seat

Also, in the class we used commercial sewing machines which are quite expensive. I have a little Jenome - what you need is a bigger needle and for cord welting you need a special foot as well. The online course will probably go over this. If not, google it. Look for "welting foot" and match it up with your machine.

I hope it helps.

Take care

Hi Nicole
Lidcombe TAFE is the only one in Sydney (NSW) offering upholstery courses for trade qualification. However, they also offer a 'pre-apprenticeship' course for people who may, or may not, wish to continue with the full 3year trade course. It's one semester (6 months) long, and you complete the first year of the trade course in that time. Currently it runs over 3 full days a week, or if you live outside Sydney, you can attend once a month for 4 consecutive days.
It's a fantastic course - well run, taught and resourced. It's just started for this semester, but they usually also offer a in intake in 2nd semester (around June/July).
Lots more info on the Lidcombe TAFE website.
Good luck.

Hi All,

I've just joined this forum and it looks great!

Harriet...
Just wondering if you've done this course? This is exactly what I want... but in Wollongong!! Yep, but Lidcombe it will have to be. Can you tell me anything more about it, please?

Thanks so much.:)
