G'day all,
A wee bit of fun - guess the wood.
Native to Australia.

This was made by my old man from a long dead tree in the garden. Finished with BLO and beeswax.

The bark looks like 'Paperbark' so it could be one of the following...

Paper-bark Melaleuca alternifolia
Paper-bark Melaleuca decora
Paper-barked Box Eucalyptus fitzgeraldii
Paper-barked Satinash Eugenia sp.
Paper-barked Satinash Syzygium alliiligneum
Paperbark Melaleuca cajuputi T
Paperbark Melaleuca dealbata
Paperbark Melaleuca leucadendra
Paperbark Melaleuca leucadendron
Paperbark Melaleuca nervosa
Paperbark Melaleuca quinquenervia
Paperbark Melaleuca viridiflora
Paperbark Barked Teatree Melaleuca nervosa
Paperbark Satinash Syzygium papyraceum
Paperbark tea-tree Leptospermum attenuatum
Paperbark Tea-tree Melaleuca cajuputi
Paperbark Tea-tree Melaleuca ericifolia
Paperbarked Tea-tree Melaleuca quinquenervia

Okay - a wee hint.
It's a common shrub, sometimes a tree in gardens (well it is in this part of the world).

Has red flowers.
Does have a papery bark, but certainly not a melaleuca or one of the other's in Cliff's list.

Correct:2tsup::2tsup::2tsup: - Callistemon - would think it must be callistemon viminalis judging by the size of the tree (about 8m). Lovely wood to work with - an amazing pinkish colour in the raw form but darkens a great deal with age and an oil finish.

Firstly where is Athi River?:?

Kenya!:o

Nicely done Andy :2tsup:. (Gotta admire the shape 'cos I've done a few like that myself as tea-caddies), Just turned some of the same callistemon myself courtesy of Sam (Simomatra) and it was indeed nice to work even though it was still a little greenish. Never thought the bark would hold on it though - did you have to 'encourage' it to stay put???

I've turned a few small pieces of bottlebrush from small branches. Was very white with purple streakin and very attractive.:):)

OK, my next guess is.... nar, joking....

I have tried a little bit several years ago & the bark did seem to stay on.

We have a couple of tall ones here that need pruning but the branches are very thin.... there might be one bit that is about 3" (75mm) thick, the rest is 2" (50mm) or less.

It does make very good perchs for pet birds. :2tsup:

Wasn't given any special treatment Vern - just a good soaking with linseed then a quick spin and a slap of beeswax buffed with a soft cloth.

Bark seems to have held on real well.

Very nice
to be candid I had no idea, except er wood

but given I've just chopped down a small version of said species I'll ensure that SHMBO doesn't relegate the bigger bits to the council clean up - I should get some shavings out of it at least!
