View Full Version : is a router cnc good enough to do this ?

currently looking at upgrading my tooling (read reduce amount of labour involved) at the workshop and had a few questions regarding cnc machines.

- just wondering if it would be possible for the basic router kits mentioned in this forum to carry out these kinds of projects ?
- can it all be done with a 3 axis machine or would a 4 axis machine be more suited (I know the throttle bodies would require a 4 axis) ?
- since I barely have enough time to keep up with my current workload/projects, I have no interest in putting my own together, can you please recommend completed machine suppliers ?

The sort of thing you've shown is beyond the capabilities of the CNC machines discussed here. These are designed (mostly) for cutting timber.
Those that can cut metal are limited to fairly thin sheet metal, mainly aluminium.

To do what you want would require a milling machine or CNC machining centre.

What you need is a machining centre with 5 axes and a lot of grunt. To get around those ports and in all those pockets the head would have to tilt.
To program the code is an expert job so probably way beyind the scope of even a moderate size business.
Best you could do is to contract the work out but unless you are producing thousands of those it probably isn't viable.
Mind you I am no expert so best to seek advice from a machine supplier before you give up.

just looking at the parts that you want made im sure that i heavy duty machine will cut these parts out but the price of the billets of aluminium would make the job uneconomical.
the best way is to build a master and as you said have them investment cast.
there are some good quality casting company out there which will even do rapid prototyping for you,and the finish on investment casting using collidal silica and zircon sand investment only needs light machining to finish tight tollerance parts good luck
