View Full Version : Refinishing teak plywood veneer

Can I apply sheets of teak veneer atop the marine plywood outdoor benches of my sailboat without any special tools? Do I have to remove or clamp the veneer while gluing, or will simply weighing it down do the job? I am trying to do this job
as inexpensively and simply as possible. I also need a new teak layer on the outside cockpit floor boards. The current benches and floors will have to be sanded to remove the top layer of teak, which is peeling badly. Are all hardwood veneers the same, or is there a special type of marine veneer? Any recommendations for which glue to use?

For a new member you are very impatient, three postings in a row, first on wednesday , second on friday and now today and all substantially the same.

The number of views might indicate that either a lot of members are away on holidays or your repeat postings is turning them off.

The members on this board are generally very helpful but unnecesary postings does not help your case. In any case it is a very specialised enquiry and there might not be much expertise on the subject.

Ahh Peter. Be gentle on the new bloke. We'll send Shane around to kneecap him later.

Sherwin, this can be a slow forum though if people know the answer, they're usuall pretty quick to chime in. As Peter said, you don't need to repeat post to get a reply and at this time of year, most of us are avoiding these damned computer thingies anyway.

As for your problem, I don't have a clue. If you want a suggestion, I'd say use epoxy and lots of weights, making sure you get it flat with all the air bubbles out of it but the potential for lifting is pretty high if you do it wrong.

But I know nothing about veneers and expoxy is what I've got in the shed.

How about you contact the local boat builders and a few carpenters. Shouldn't be hard to find someone.

Cheers
Richard

Sorry gentlemen if I ruffled some feathers. Being
a new member, I'm not sure which forum has the expertese to answer my question. Also, I have had
bad experiences on other boards where your requests can go for months, and never get answered. All that said, I will try to exercise
more restraint in the future. I am happy that at
least I got one answer, although I feel I still need more advice on whether I can handle this thing myself.

Sherwin, like most members I click on the ' View New Posts' button and all posts since my last visit are show irrespective of the forum in which it is posted.
As to replying if I can't help I won't comment and as I have no expertise in this area I will only say that I think Richard is right in his advice.
BTW welcome to this Board and I hope you feel I was not too harsh on you.

Sherwin, don't worry about Sturds, he is a good sort of bloke but it's that time of year I guess.:)
I really can't help you much except to suggest that perhaps you contact Bruce Mc Conkey at Boatcraft Pacific as he is a "Guru" when it comes to your sort of problem. Good luck and please let us know how you fare.
