Hello all,

I recently put a grill beneath my myrtle coffee table. It is my father's design (his original made of sassafras). I sanded the top to 1200 grit prior to varnishing (to resist the inevitable coffee and wine spills). I have heard that it is sufficient to sand to only 240 grit if you finish with varnish - is this true??? - but there does seem to be a slight improvement with the finer sanding. Comments welcomed...

Hi Swifty,
I use 240 between coats of varnish, when I get to the last coat I sand back with 800 wet and dry (dry) then add a polishing oil. Once I am happy with that I go to 00 to 0000 steel wool dry then with oil. You have a dead flat satin finish that people just can't keep their hands off.
