Can anyone help me out with the plans on how to make a windmill?
I have an irrigation problem to sort out over here in ET... have ground water, have wind, have a basic manufacturing industry, have malnutrition in the dry season due to lack of irrigation.
Electric or dieso pumps cost too much to be viable.
If so, please pm me and I'll get your telephone number and call to discuss.
As always, thanks in advance....

Sorry, I don't have any info for you, but there is a very good Permaculture forum here (http://forums.permaculture.org.au/index.php?sid=47de55cf997b25889c06e506e5d0a136)- I'm sure someone there will know something.

Hi Clinton,
I've seen a UNESCO publication (c. 1970's?) at uni on exactly this- low tech wind powered pumping options for developing countries. I photocopied a great section of it, because all sorts of design details for making it yourself...canvas and bamboo stuff!
If you are interested I'll get it from the library and see how we go.

I'll see if I can find info on the southern cross farm types used in oz as the seals and bits are still available

Quick update, just located my copied section, it was from a publication titled "Proceedings of the meeting of the expert working group on the use of solar and wind energy" (Energy Resources Development series #16, United Nations NY '76) which sounds pretty dull! It actually contains a lot of drawings and plans for real working stuff, like the Greek sail windmills, and basic bucket wheels, simple flapper valves and such. I made use of the timber bushing details for windmill shafts which proved highly successful.
I just went searching here (http://www.unescap.org/esd/energy/) to see if it was still available, but lucked out...maybe contact then directly?
Cheers,

G'Day Clinton
Have a read here http://www.iklimnet.com/save/windwaterpump.html but I think you may find most now use a combination of wind and solar.
Cheers

Here are some links that the locals should find generally useful - they have the important advantage of being FREE.
This is a windmill enthusiasts page, best I could find quickly:
http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/default.asp
These are more general agricultural/rural plans (couldn't find a windmill) some useful - like diy concrete water tanks, but some not so useful, like nuclear fallout shelters. All the plans are .pdf's/

Actually this might be what you are looking for:

Same book, different publisher & price. I'm pretty sure I have a copy of the LV edition, I just don't know where it is. Too bad you don't have a tidal basin that you could use with a water wheel to power your pump.

You could use a small vehicle modified differential as the box then put a fan on the front of it?
Even twin pumps of one turbine?

I did a quick search for Aid Water Pumps and came up with some interesting sites that explain how different systems are made for varying projects.
Some of these sites may be able to provide funding whilst an email explaining your situation may elicit practical windmill and pump designs that are already in use in aid assisted communities.
http://www.pumpaid.org/ Follow explanation for Elephant Pump. This could be easily configured to be driven via a windlass (the windmill axle).
http://www.agr.gc.ca/pfra/water/wind_e.htm Good on explanation.
Here it is the Fischer and Paykel Windmill generator...made from old washing machine motor. Use it to drive an electric motor. Even provides pdf templates AND WIP photos!!!

thanks all.... this is the second reply, the other being lost in one of the many power outages.
Lots of info there.... I'll trawl through it all and see what I can find.
Thanks... will let you all know if I can pull it off.
