Yeah that's what I have since found out.

The first time I clicked on the link, I got their default homepage and had to select a store.

If I then went back and clicked on the original link it then jumped to the intended webpage.

It's based on the Keller Dovetail Jig http://www.kellerdovetail.com/ (Which is probably where the KL comes from)

Not sure who predates who, but the Keller looks to have been around since about 1975. Typically consists of 2 separate templates, but there are also back-to-back versions. Don't know where Carbatec's one is made, but the Keller is made in the USA

appears on the Keller home page. In all the current episodes of NYW on foxtel, Norm uses the Leigh dovetail jig when making any dovetails.
Just shows how the advertising becomes a farce.

I have one of these that I use in the UK. Although mine was bought from a store here in the UK and it is badged as Dakota. It comes as the template and two cutters and you make your own backing piece. Got to admit though of all the dovetail systems I have used this is the easiest to set up taking just a couple of minutes and it cuts perfect dovetails every time. I should add that I have not used the Leigh jig though...well not yet.:wink:

No its not a gifkins it is a copy of the Keller jig. Keller have been on the market since approx 75, according to the wood review, gifkins were released sometime in 1997.
The Keller and the carbatec jigs are so quick and easy to use and produce a good looking through dovetail, only trouble is that they have fixed spacing and only do a through dovetail. Carbatecs version is way cheaper than the Keller.

I didnt know about the Keller jig. I guess I am a little wiser today.
So maybe the Gifkins is Rogers of an improvement on it:?

Roger Gifkins jig was designed and made by him quite independently of the Keller after he had made hundreds of presentation boxes with handcut dovetails. The tedium of that task led him to never want to do it again.
It is not uncommon for people to invent, discover or design similar items or principles. Look at Newton and Leibnitz with calculus Bell and an italian fellow (whse name escapes me) with the telephone.
There is a jig on the market that is like a cross between the leigh and the Gifkins called the "KATIE". and I'm sure it was released befOre either of them.

I was in Carbatec Perth yesterday and this jig is on sale for $99. I only popped in for a new catalog, but came away with one. I have been after one for a while (have been out of stock on previous visits), so a win on my part.

I do know that the Porter Cable jig was invented by a guy who calls himself Milacron on the Practical Machinist forum in the States. That was how he got into metal machining. The jig he came up with is very very similar to the Leigh jig.

Who was first no idea but they look much the same.

It is the Keller Journeyman 1500 jig, made by Keller.
