Wanted a short break and decided to try out airasia's new service flying out of Coolangatta to Kuala Lumpur. Booked an extra leg to Sabah and back, also on airasia.

HIghly recommend these cheap flights to KL. Whilst there's no DVD in the back of the seat and no movie screen either - it's an airbus so no frills! - it was a good trip each way. You need a good woodworking book or a bundle of woodie mags or a portable DVD player (especially if you have kids!!!). Flight takes about 8 hours and you cannot take your own food. Food service on board is OK and pretty cheap. If you want a Qantas-type meal you'll be disppointed - you get one small microwave dish containing the meal (no tray just plastic cutlery and the dish!).

When you land at KL you're at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal which is 20km from the International Airport (although both use the same runway!) You have to grab your bag and then check it in again if you are travelling another leg. If you're flying another leg with a low cost carrier it's a hassle but part of the cheap deal BUT if you were using KL as a hub and flying form KL to say London you'd have to grab your bag and use the shuttle bus to get to the International Terminal.....I'll try that next trip! (Note to self - stop buying tools and save for another holiday....)

I booked for 8 days in Sabah using airasia's package booking service called "go holiday". Ended up in a FABULOUS hotel in Kota Kinabalu. EVERYTHING ran very smoothly, 5 star hotel cheap as chips, so I really do recommend trying out airasia.

Just remember that flights are cheap because they are BASIC - friendly, clean but BASIC. The only warning is that airasia currently has NO CUSTOMER SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA and if you have any problems you have to telephone MALAYSIA!!!!! There is no easy email contact or fax available. To their credit, airasia is trying to address this but the more services they offer here the higher the prices will go!
