For those that balance their tools with weight in the handle, do you have a "rule of thumb" for how much to use? I have started making tools using machining tool bits (HSS and carbide) fitted into steel pipe or solid steel rod and they work much better on hard, dry woods because they are easier to hold due to the weight and length.

A good question, in short I am not sure.

What I tend to do is see how it feels in the hand as I make it. I have never really weighed my gear.......sort of 'that feels about right'

What he said. If it feels right, it's enough. I used BBs 'til a friend gave me some lead shot.
But on my harpoon that's used for long reach across the rest, I filled it with BBs, and never batted an eye... It's heavy as heck, so I do strain to pick it up, tho. :D
