What kind of wood or material is the best for ornamental turning on?

Toni, from what I've read and from talking to some ornamental turners here, the best wood seems to be plain, finely grained timber.

The reason for plain grain and colour has to do with not allowing the grain to interfere with the look of the ornamentation.

I think the Europeans use a lot of Box - Buxus.

Toni double checked today at the Ornamental Turners meeting and they say anything but Ozzie Hard woods the cutters on that Lathe were not designed for that type of abuse.

Low prominence grained wood that comes to mind are;

Huon Pine
Hoop Pine
Macrocarpra

in hardwoods
Redgum
Ti Tree
Myrtle

Toni.
Minimum grain hardwoods are what you are looking for.
Harder the better for well defined patterns. Soft grain will tear easily so use choose wider patterns.
Plastic is okay.

Most of the displays I have seen were done with Camphor.

Reason for that Corbs its cheap convenient and easy to come by

Originally best was Ivory, Ebony and bone.

anything FREE

that way if you bugger it up, put it in the woodstove and get BTU's out of it!!!
