For what it is worth. I find that drywall sanding mesh is very good for sanding turnings to the point where something finer than 120 is needed. It cuts fast, doesn't plug, the dust does not fly as bad and on softer woods , small nicks and tearouts can be corrected more easily.

Yes, works best for me when handheld on spindle work. The dust falls straight through the mesh and keeps the job cool. It's flexibility is also an advantage around tight forms. Only seems to come in the coarser grades at my hardware shop, so have to use other abrasives for the finer grades.

PS - we tend to call 'drywall' plasterboard here

I recently (just yesterday, actually) used some open-mesh 220 on a piece of green unkwood (identity pending) that was soaking wet. Although it clogs, it's nowhere near as bad as regular sandpaper, and it made a right good final surface. The bowl is probably oval by now.

Bunnings have it in the plastering/Gyprock section, I have a few sheets left over from a recent ceiling repair so will give it a try too, sounds feasible.
