Cliff, Cliff, Cliff - I am so happy I am almost crying - fantastic for you to put the pics up!!!!! Looks like those Northerners are doing something extraordinary - both individually and in terms of an event!!!

See if you can contact Australian Amateur Boatbuilding magazine and get the front cover - some of those pics are fantastic - they often have a few colour pages inside as well for the better pictorials! Hell - you could give WoodenBoat a shot!

I think that the work of the people involved and the support from participants and these posts of yours and the pics put the Tinaroo RAID on the map in a big way.

Just FANTASTIC!

There are some better photos than mine, mine is only a $400 camera.
I also don't have any pics of the main event 'cos I was in it up to my ears. :D

The main event was about 14 boat loads of people all trying to throw coloured ping pong balls into baskets in the rigging of the pirate galleon.
The galleon was manned by 2 pirates armed with loaves of sliced bread.
They would dip a slice of bread in to water & throw it at anybody who got too close.
They would also throw the ping pong balls that missed the basket overboard.
Heaps of fun, I finished up looking like a chook's breakfast. :D

I'll get some of the other pics & post them here eventually.

At first I said it was a keel boat & then I was told it was a centreboard sloop but I said I didn't remember seeing any centreboard so, after a few e-mails, I have some more info about this boat. Secret (http://www.scruffie.com/secret_story.htm) & Secret (http://www.scruffie.com/secret.htm).

This is the bloke who owns the camera.
He is in an old restored OK.
He was sailing OKs when he was 12.
Check out some of these shots. :2tsup:
He makes it look easy...
The bloke who now owns this boat, & restored it so well, turned it turtle on his first trip out in it not long before these photos. :oo:

Is the Laser II a recognised class??
How do they fit the jib or isn't it a luff pocket anymore.

Boatmik
28th June 2008, 10:40 AM
Howdy,

The Laser II is a totally different class from the Laser. It was meant as a 420 killer.

It has a conventional tracked mast a trapeze and quite a nice sized spinnaker.

For a while they were quite popular on the US intercollegiate scene but the rig is a bit crappy - pull on the mainsheet or the boomvang and the mainsail flattens out excessively because of the way the rig is designed.

I would have come equal third (in a borrowed boat) in a National championship for the class a long time ago if I had known the rules a bit better. We got taken out by a non racing trailer sailer on port tack (sailed straight into us and we ended up being Diddled by Marine Hull insurance because both boats had policies under them - Like I said - it was a long time ago). I should have protested to claim average points for that race.

The Guys who did come third also lost a race because of a mishap - but they did claim for it. They ended up becoming Olympic representatives in the 470 class and were sailing a borrowed boat too.

Hi Cliff,

I enjoyed the pics. Its great to see another old OK Dinghy being enjoyed- mine was built in 1967 and is 'unrestored' but still going.:2tsup:

I take it petrol-powered boats are not allowed on the dam I noticed electric and steam power along with oar, paddle and sail.

I wonder how the 'powers that be' would class an electric trolling motor charged by an on-board petrol generator? :?

Tinaroo looks like a great event, If only we could overcome the tyranny of distance (and petrol prices):(

...I take it petrol-powered boats are not allowed on the dam I noticed electric and steam power along with oar, paddle and sail. ...
Tinaroo is huge....
It holds 407,000 mega litres, is 15Kms long with 209 Kms of shoreline.
There are ski boats & jet skis & areas set aside for them.
This event was held at the Sailing Club at Black Gully, the power boats streer clear of the area.
Apart from the steamer & a couple of little electrics, at least 3 of the bigger boats had motors as well.

The Secret has an outboard in it that goes through the back left corner of the hull, you can see it in the photo above.

On this map, the Sailing Club is at point A.

could we ever use some of that water down here !!
Small world... my dad was involved in the construction & early operations of Tinaroo Dam. We left there in the early '60s. A long, long way away now...

Howdya do that
