I have had this old door jamb sitting on the wood rack for a long time and finally found a reason to pull it out when I was looking for some nice quarter sawn 100 x 12mm boards. First time I have used the Freud ripping blade and to say I am impressed is an understatement, ate through the jarrah even when taking a full depth cut on the little 1 1/2hp jet with no trouble at all, whisper quiet and a finish that would be more than good enough for gluing up if you were making a workbench or similar - thanks again Wongo for the advice re ripping blade and crosscut blade:2tsup:.

Pictures tell the story.

After weeks of procrastinating over cutting the timber to size and cutting the dovetails I bit the bullet this afternoon. The box is a commission that needs to be a specific size so I could not afford to screw up the dovetails and have to cut them off and redo as it would then be to small. Took a while to get my head around how I would miss the dovetail that is second from the top all the way around so that when I cut the box open it will run neatly through the missing dovetail. Cut the dovetails with the Leigh Jig and got to use my new Jet clamps for the glueup - I am in love:2tsup:

Hi Burnsy,

Looking good. Do keep us posted. Photos, remember we all like photos.:D

Will the whole box be from teh recycled door jam?

Might need sunglasses for those Jet clamps though. Colour does not suit your shed decore, not good feng shui, but I will gladly take them off your hands to save you any embaressment. :D

Cheers

Cut some bases out of 3mm ply that has a jarrah veneer on it for the box today, as it is so large and is going to beholding a large photo scrapbook I laminated two sheets together for the base. Decided I am not really sure on what finish to use and it would be nice to have two options to show the customer before finishing the big box and seeing as though I did not stuff up any of the dovetails I had enough of the jarrah left to make two smaller boxes, one dovetailed in the same manner as the large one and one mitred. The customer has indicated that she would like the box finished with organoil which I like using but am not convinced on for the box so I will finish one of the small boxes with HBO and one with white shellac.

The burl in the front is going to be cut into veneers for the top of the big box and the small dovetailed box. It was twice the size but had a massive split in it so I cut it through the split and it is still big enough to do the top of the box in two bookmatched pieces. At this stage I am thinking that I will use the piece of marri that is sitting on the mitred box for a lid, might be a bit plain though?

Finished the smaller mitred box today, ended up putting a solid burl top on it. Finished it in white shellac and Traditional Wax. Happy with how it came up considering it was my first effort at using shellac and wax. Learnt a few things along the way which is always good:2tsup:

I am a bit gun shy about putting oil on the second small box now as I don't think it will do the burl justice so am awaiting feedback from the client regarding her throughts on the shellac/wax finish. Might just finish a bit of burl offcut with HBO if she wants to see an oil finish rather than possibly ruin the other small box.

No hardware, tops just sit on, has a backing piece of jarrah (about 4mm) that fits inside the box to hold it in place.
