View Full Version : Small screws/splitting of mdf

Does anyone know where I can get small brass screws...less than 3/8"?
3/8" are just a tad too long for 9mm wood and I would prefer the finer ones.
Also, can anyone help with splitting of mdf...when I put the hinges on the outside of a box, it sometimes tends to split either on the lid or the base. I've tried sanding the screws down a little, but it still happens.
Thank you for any help once again, people have been wonderful here http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif

Judy, to stop the splitting drill a hole at the root diameter of the screw. to obtain small brass screws I would suggest that you email Beenatree Crafts. You will find an email link on their page at www.ubeaut.com.au (http://www.ubeaut.com.au)

Hi Judy.
Bring in the kitchen industry, I work with MDF a lot.Do as said. Make sure that you drill you hole as long, if not a longer than the lenght of the screw and counter sink for the heads if you want the screw heads to finish flush with the surface. This will stop the outer edges of the board from
breaking away.

Hi and Chris ~
Many thanks for your help...being self-taught, one often has to learn the hard way http://ubb.ubeaut.com.au/ubb/smile.gif

Do you drill a hole slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw btw?

Judy, drill the hole the same size as the bottom of the thread.

Hi again Judy.
As said, the size of the hole should be the size of the screw shank. That is the width of the screw less the thread.
