My Arborist Buddy Called......

........ he says he has a nice chunk of Sakura on his truck....... do I want it....

About 4' long by 14" thick at the widest point, knarly, full of bugs, has some dirt INSIDE it and such, the tree has been standing dead for about 3 years, but there was little rot on the trunk, the part I got.

Even know this tree was DEAD for 3 years, this chunk of wood, two of the arborists could barely lift it and put it in my truck. When I got home I used gravity and hoists to move it around It was HOT today, one of the first really hot and humid days, the arborists all looked rather tired and worn out, but they perked right up when I gave them a couple of cold six packs of beer, smiles all around

This is the top area of the log, the part that split into three branches, I did not know what to do with it exactly, so I made a big round chunk out of it, I'll try to make a big hollow form from it

The table full of chunks that need more porcessing, some cutting, and some sealing, then they will be added to the growing pile of "to be turned" stock

I think that the Ci1 Easy Rougher is going to come in handy!

Oh yeah, the guy told me that they have a really nice tree for me on Monday (when it rains.......) they told me it was "Gekkeijyu"......... no idea, but they said it was an "Italian" tree

I asked one of my daughters, she said, "You know, like in the Olympics......" "Laurel"..... I wonder how that will turn?

They said the trunk was about 14" in diameter....

Anyone turn Laurel?

Pretty good deal when you get the arborists delivering the timber to you in neatly cut sections, Stu. Nice chunk of timber, must be pretty top beer you keep in the fridge there.

Looking forward to seeing the Sakura flying around the Dungeon in much smaller sections.

Laurel, from memory is part of the same family as Camphor, your new tool should rip through it like butter. If so then....

Rough it out green and drop it in fresh water for about 6 weeks then dry out in a paper sack or box until it stops losing weight, another couple of weeks or so.

When we were in Italy a couple of years ago we stayed at a place just outside San Gimignano & they had a hedge that they called Laurel.

They would take the leaves & wrap them around a sausage & pin it in place with a tooth pick & put it on the BBQ.

I found out that it is what we call Bay leaves from the Bay Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_laurel).

I have turned Camphor Laurel, same family but different genus.

Camphor Laurel is certainly a timber tree but I'm not sure about Bay Laurel.

Well, it seems that I have the wrong kind of friends, the only thing mine drop at my front door, is troubles. Yeah, I suppose having "arborists" as friends is a good start, huh?:wink:

I would be interested also in see what this Laurel of yours will look like, as I found some unusual branches on top of a large pile of tree left overs I gather for burning. I don't know who put it there or from where it come from but the leafs (mostly dry, then), were an exact match to the cooking bay leaves I'm very familiar with and we all know. The only difference was that these leafs had no smell at all, which was strange as bay leaves have a distinct smell while green and get a stronger smell as they dry.:?
I have cut the bigger pieces/logs (about 8" diameter) with the length similar to the diameter and rip the logs in half. This timber was quite dry but I sealed the end-grain just in case even on those pieces that I rounded ready for turning. I haven't yet had the chance to turn any of it so, I only have pics of the logs/blanks and no pics of the leafs (all burnt).:~
I have actually discussed this matter with Frank&Earnest, not that long ago by private email but, we didn't get to any conclusive decision about its identity.
Hopefully, your future pics can be used for comparison!:D

Stu - get yourself an industrial or restaurant type microwave. You can rough turn green timber then 'nuke' it to stabilise it before finishing. There have been a few posts about the technique.
