Hi
Just wondering if you can help. I am setting up on a car trailer that has an electric/hydraulic tip tray with a 12v 1500w motor that draws draws up to 70 amps on start up and when the cylinder reaches full extension .But only draws about 10amps or so on normal lift when empty. Tested with a tong tester.
The winch by the owners manual says it can draw up to 25 amps under full load of 2000lbs,but they recommend putting a 50 fuse breaker if installed permanently.
I have had mixed suggestions so far as to what size breaker I would need ranging from 35 amp to 100 amp to cover the peak of the hydraulic motor draw. As the high draws are only on start up for what is only a second maybe, would one of these waterproof push button breakers ( below ) handle this task ?
I already have a N70z battery set up in a battery box ( Ark brand ) that has a cigarette lighter style 12v outlet and a charge indicator. I also have a battery isolation switch with a removable key. But I would be looking to purchase most other things required.
Please find attached circuit suggested by an electrician
Thanks for your help
Mike

Mike,

The attachment is missing,

But for a guide on the fuse rating, you would need to know how long the 70A is present. Have a look at http://www.littelfuse.com/data/en/Product_Catalogs/Chapter12BladeTerminalandSpecialPurposeFuses.pdf and you'll probably find a slow-blow type fuse of about 50A will be fine. Try giving Swe-check a call ( www.swecheck.com.au (http://www.swecheck.com.au) ). They are a specialised fuse supplier and stock the LittleFuse range.

Also, be careful with your choice of connectors at high currents. Most of the regularly available automotive stuff isn't too good at higher currents. Look for stuff like "Anderson" connectors (APP) http://www.andersonpower.com
