Has anybody accessed and or tried the Plane irons available from"ACADEMY SAWS" out of Queensland, that are currently advertised in the back of the Australian Woodworker?

2.6mm thick and 63-64 HRC Ice Hardened which I haven't heard of before!

Not cheap, so I guess it's one for the die-hard enthusiast!

Cheers:)

John,
Acadamy Saws is charging about double what Lee Valley' 1/8" thick A2 tool steel blades cost. I have not tried the Academy blades but the Lee Valley ones are excellent, and good value for around US$35.

There was a trial of 6 different blades in Wood Review 33. The Academy blades were judged by Richard Vaughan to be the best value. Other blades in the test were Stanley, Record, Hock, Samurai and Holtey.

Yes, I have an Academy blade and it is excellent. It takes a very sharp edge, holds it for ages, and the thickness of the blade does away with any chatter. I've just done a heap of planing on Tassie oak and Myrtle, so have given it a reasonable work out.

Cheers,
Alex
