When making wooden featherboards is there an ideal timber to use? Conversely are there timber types to steer clear of?

I dont know if anyone has nominated an ideal wood but just look for strait grain and no defects. I have used tas oak and that was ok. Spotted gum may be better as it will bend more. Avoid brittle timber.

I have used most timbers but Fine straight grained knot free AAA grade Oregon is my favorite.

I used Jarrah because I had a zillion little 135 mm wide floor board offcuts.

BobL, any chances of some more photos of your router table fence, so we can see its design ? looks great!

Here (http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com.au/showthread.php?t=30427&page=2) you go. It's built on a router extension wing of a TS.

Is that an aftermarket router add on plate for the table saw?

what do you think of it? easy to fit/pain in the behind/etc?

I'm tossing up whether to buy one (carbi sell one for $475) or make a dedicated unit. $475 is a bit of loot, after all.

cheers

TTD brisbane have a router table with a good fence, tilt up top for access to the router and steel legs for $420. Carbatec ahve another table saw extension router table for $169 plus $230 for teh fence as I recall, the one your talking about has the removable insert, which you probably don't need if your hanging it out in the breeze.

I took some photos today but teh one of the freestanding table got corrupted. I'm about to build a webpage of the other stuff including the cheaper carbatec table as fitted to the TTD saw table.

Some big pics, no text yet.

It's an after market REW (Router Extension Wing). I got it as part of the package when I bought the TS in early 2006. I think I paid $100 for it and it was $149 at the time and is now $159. See Here (http://www.timbecon.com.au/details/router-extension-wing-13461.aspx).

It was quite easy to fit. I needed to drill 3 holes in the TS top otherwise it was OK. The REW was smaller than my TS top so I had to make a surround for it.

I used a L shaped 32 mm thick pale grey melamine and bolted it to the REW to fill in the length deficiency and make the table a little wider so that I could add a T-Track at the edge of the REW. The jarrah surround was some scraps of skirting board I had left from some renovations.
I already had the melamine so all it cost me apart from the REW was the cost of some T-track.
