View Full Version : Replacing Handles on Drawknife?

Hi All,

I picked up an old drawknife on the weekend. Unfortunatley it has a missing handle. I have a lathe so I am going to turn up some new handles , but I have noticed the remaining handle seems to be welded inplace.

When replacing the handles, do I just grind off the little washer holding the handle in , replace the handle and re-weld the washer back on???

Its seems like the only way go, but I thought I better double check before wrecking a perfectly good tool :)

TIA Joe

I can't tell how the handles on my drawknife are fixed on. They are very tight, however, as they need to be. This is the important point - drawknife handles need to be able to take an awful beating since they are the area of stress. They need to be on as tightly as possible. Drawknives with loose handles do not work well.

The drawknives I've seen (including my dad's ones) all have the tang go all the way through the handle, then a washer, and the tang is bent over the washer.

Cheers,
