View Full Version : Silky Oak damaged by Brasso

I have inherited an old box type ship's lamp, brass frame with glass on all 5 sides. Except the glass has been broken over the years, and it is now a document case with silky oak timber infills where the glass used to be.

Some time in the past, an effort has been made to polish the brass with Brasso, or something similiar, and the rubbing rag has overlapped on to the timber infill, marking the timber, with all the tiny grain showing a white brasso residue.

Can anyone please advise how I might restore the timber to normal?

regards,

Jill

Had the same problem on our front door ,the brass fittings get polished with Brasso ,it always leaves a white residue in the grain of the wood .
It is basically dry polish ,I have removed it with a tooth brush and some turps with gentle scrubbing ,then wipe with a rag.
When I polish the fittings now ( about every 10 years whether it needs it or not ,,,its a pia job ) I put painters tape over the wood first to stop the Brasso from getting on the wood.
