Hi Ashore,
Not real sure but I reckon its medical, like an osteo surgeon's tool. I've got a few bits and pieces like that...the best ones are really long drill bits:(.

Cheers

Don't know andy the great uncle whoes shed that the box came from had nothing to do with anything medical , though he was a bower bird
the machined cut in the center of the blade appears to have a cutting edge ground in it . not a good picture I know , the steel must be ok though because everything else had rust on it and this has been sitting in an old wooden box for the last 30 + years didn't have any :?

SWMBO spent 15 years in operating theatres and didn't recognise it, but it could be more specialist, maybe even dental? Vets?

Is there a chip in the blade?

Duh... Read the rest of the post....

If its a machined cut with a blade, it'd be for cutting thread or something? Maybe stitching thread?

Herbrand made a lot of specialist automotive tools so it may be something along those lines.

Check out:

http://alloy-artifacts.com/herbrand-van-chrome.html

and maybe email them to see if they will look it up in one of their catalogues.

According to the 1937 Herbrand catalogue. No 198 is a Stop-Squeak Lubricator, Universal for all car springs (no coil springs then).
It was hammered in between the springs and grease was applied through the grease nipple (missing on yours).
Hope this helps.

Ps It says it was machined from Chrome Molybdem Steel harden and tempered etc ...length 5 3/4" weight 7ozs cost $1.75
Could send you a copy of the page if you wished. G

Well done! I have tried looking it up, and didn't do any good. Of course it is what it is, once it is explained. :)
