Hi - is there anyone out there with any experience of using toothed belts and pulleys on a home-made cnc? It appears, at least initially that belts would be an economical alternative to trapeziodal thread and nuts.
If belts are OK, what pitch would be required e.g. 5mm?.
Cheers
Noel

G'day Noel,

I've yet to jump in and start my own unit but I am familiar with belts and pulleys etc.

If you are going down this road you'll need a matched set of pulleys and belt. the pitch is not important. If your pulleys aren't the same size you'll need to do some math.

Hi Tankstand - thanks for the reply. As a 'belt guru' do you know whether the cogged belts stretch over time, and whether they can give the same degree of acurracy as screw threads etc?

Yes they stretch over time, but only under large loads! I'm talking CNC mills moving heads that weigh a tonne, rapiding at 60000mm/m. They usually snap or strip teeth. You'll have no worries using them at home.
