I've been asked by the local Pub to make up some beer mugs...any advice on wood and finish? My research so far indicates oak is the traditional wood used for this.

Ok, I just turned four chalices for my church. They wanted them split in half to hold half wine and half grape juice for communion. (they use intinction sometimes) I used 150 year old spalted maple given to me by another turner in my club. I turned them for the chalice, then split them in half and glued in a 1/4 inch piece of Bubinga. I sawed away the outline before gluing. Put back on the lathe sanded em smooth. I then put on several coats of a salad bowl finish. Works great. The type of wood us up to you. Though I would suggest a tighter grain may take the sealant better. My pastor wants 6 more of them so I gotta get busy. Happy turning.
